The other day when I interviewed Ed Dale about the iPad, he mentioned something that got me thinking…
And so I decided to create a video about it and share it with you.
Let me know what you think, and whether you have any other tips for making your blog or website kick ass!
Hi there, Gideon Shalwick here and welcome to my forest.
I live next to this little forest… birds in the background, you can’t see this little guy, but there’s a little dragon behind me. Maybe he’ll walk into the shot.
Anyway, I want to share something with you that I think will help you with your online business. Recently I had an interview with Ed Dale one of the worlds top internet marketers and also a very experienced social media user and technology expert. He flew over to the United States, was there for one day, got the Ipad and then flew back to Australia. That’s how crazy he is about it.
I had an interview with him and I asked him, “What are the next opportunities for us as internet marketers and bloggers for the Ipad?” He gave me some really good ideas and I’ve published the interview on my blog at www.GideonShalwick.com if you want to visit it.
During the interview he mentioned something that I thought was really interesting, especially for web design. He talked about one of the key things about the Ipad is that, “It gets out of the way of the user.” When you are using the Ipad you don’t actually notice it. You just notice the application that you are using. For example, if you are using the word application, or pages, or keynotes, or itunes, you only see that. You only experience that and you don’t actually realize that the Ipad is there.
I thought, these guys know a thing or two about design, how can we use that for website design? It got me thinking about my own website, my own blog, and websites, and web interfaces in general. What is it that we can do to make these websites get out of the way of the user? I think that is what it’s really about. A website is about providing content and providing a user experience. Your job as the blogger or the website owner is to make sure that you get out of the way and that everything else gets out of the way so that the user can just experience what you have on your site.
I think that is really critical. I often see so many people spending so much time and money on the development and design of their graphics for their sites and when you get to their site that’s all you see. You see the graphics, you just see the logo, you just see the branding. Look at Google, look at the biggest search engines, look at YouTube, look at their design, it’s extremely simple. They get out of the way. You see their brand but it’s really small.
I think it’s a really good design principal that I’ll be applying in my future websites from now on as well and I’ll be applying it on this very blog, www.GideonShalwick.com because I think it works. The big guys are doing it and they must know something that no one else does. So, I’m going to copy that and hopefully it’s useful to you too and that you can apply it to any future pages or blogs or websites that you set up.
That’s it from me. Just a quick tip and thanks to Ed Dale for pointing that out.

[..YouTube..] very good point man. people really need to think about usability much much much more.
Hey Gideon,
Excellent point. Simplicity always wins over clutter. When you try to make your website do too many things simultaneously chances are it will not be very effective at either of those things.
Minimalistic designs work great for blogs as the emphasis should be on content (and an opt-in form) not bells and whistles. That’s why I hate portal sites. They have sooo many things on their homage it gives you a headache.
Your blog is a great example for people who are too worried about their design. Simplicity, readabilty, lots of white space…you don’t need a lot more than that.
By the way, nice lizard you got there Gideon.
Hey Zsolt
Cheers!
That lizard was a little scary – at one point I thought he was going to jump on my head! That would have made an interesting video.
Gideon
Haha I really enjoyed the lizard too! I am jealous of where you live!
I love the tip you presented in the video as well of course
My father has always pointed this out to me – be as simple as possible with the design. He points out google and how simple they are. I just started a new blog and I will without a doubt take this tip with me.
Thanks Gideon!

[..YouTube..] Very good Video Gideon. Such a simple idea but can make a huge difference in a website. Keep it Simple!!! Oh by the way I liked your little friend in the back ground.

[..YouTube..] Simply profound and profoundly simple – “Get out of the way”. Another great mind to tap into when it comes to user interface and usability is Jared Spool. I’ll keep tuning in! Thanks Gideon!
[..YouTube..] @jtunkelo oh yeah for sure – it’s incredible how much time gets wasted on graphics and other unimportant things when it comes to designing web pages.
[..YouTube..] @dehendrix64 Hey Katrina – hehehe – yeah that little rascal of a water dragon – there’s another video coming up shortly where his mate gets featured a little more…
Talk soon!
Gideon
[..YouTube..] @kgilmo01 No probs! Ok, I will check out Jared Spool – is he on YouTube also?
Gideon
[..YouTube..] Gideon,

[..YouTube..] @GideonShalwick jared spool is the founder of uie (dot) com (i’m unable to insert url’s in the response). you’ll probably like the “$300 million button” article.
hey there my friend, I have read your report and I must say a huge give away
like you said in the blog I bet most people thought they where suppose top pay for so much helpful information. This could have been easily a product in itself!!
One Quick question for you: I have seen people give away things on there blogs if someone just posts to there friends on facebook or tweets the blog post. How do you get this kind of plugin or is it a all together a different type of blog? Ryan D just used it with his Cherry Picker software.
Thanks again for all of your help!

Hi Gideon,
I’m one of your newest FANS! Love your laidback style and your heart for helping folks like me “get it.” I will certainly be taking your courses in the next days. Question: I have a WP.com blog http://BanquetSpeaker.com and now it seems you highly suggest I upgrade to a .org site. Will the content transfer, as well as my user name? Thanks my new friend!
Mike
Hey Mike
Thanks for your great feedback!
I’m pretty sure you can transfer your blog from WordPress.com to WordPress.org pretty easily. My friend Joel from http://www.BlogTechGuy.com may be able to help you out with that. Just tell him I sent you…
