I think you are completely right! If you use too many, you are going to overwhelm yourself and not be able to create those connections on the social media sites. They will help in distributing your content a whole lot faster. I have asked myself that same question before, and it is nice to know that i have chosen to go the right way!

What are your thoughts on combining your ideas of a sharp focus but using a tool like tubemogul or traffic geyser during initial subscription to get automatic syndication across many sites?

In my experiences actually, you were right, Youtube does tend to produce way more traffic than all the other sites, sometimes with all of them put together, especially when as you said, the focus is on:
1) Building community
2) Sharing the video with other tubers who might be interested
3) Building up your profile and having discussions.

So I guess even in the world of social media, elimination and concentration are still powerful forces.
