Do you ever struggle getting more comments on your YouTube videos? This
    will fix that…

    • ToGraphic4U

ahha! Ask! that's what I thought. Sort of like asking for people to subscribe. I just started asking for people to subscribe, and Bam! I did! It's not as much as I expected, but, I just started. Now I have something else to add, to ask for comments! What a great idea!

    • Gideon Shalwick

+ToGraphic4U Haha yeah sometimes success can actually be very simple indeed ;)

    • Sandi Eveleth

Great job, +Gideon Shalwick. Pretty sure you'll hit 100!

    • Gideon Shalwick

+Sandi Eveleth Haha yeah at this rate – although… should I be counting ALL the comments? Or just the comments from everyone else (excluding my own comments)?

    • Sandi Eveleth

Hmmmm…well, selfishly I'd say all the comments but, realistically I'd say only new commenter's comments…!! (In other words, not your comments and not this comment – wow, THAT's a lot of "comments".). +Gideon Shalwick, still think you'll reach it no problem. Just retweeted ya' and will send it out on Facebook. The 80/20 also works with your fans. 20% of us will do 80% of the shares, etc!

    • Online Income Startup™

More G+ followers = More comments, am I right?

  2. Edmund Pelgen

It’s nice to know I’m one of the top 20% of the top 20%. It’s a good
point. When starting out creating videos I’m sure I like everyone else was
not analysing the percentages…wondering why i wasn’t getting comments
when my views were so low. I guess I should just keep plugging away and
build that audience. Great informative vid as always Gideon.

  3. void157

    Great stuff as always!

  4. Greg Savage

+Gideon Shalwick Sorry, but I have to ask this and you know what the
    questions are.

    1) Was this shot on the Iphone 5s? I’m always amazed by your quality
    2) How much light are you using in your videos (watts how many)

    *This Is A Great Video*

As far as the video automatically going to google plus once someone
comments… By default it use to be automatically check for you, but not
    anymore.

If you share or anyone shares the video on G+ and people comment on the
*shared* versions of the video, those automatically go to the youtube
channel, but not the other way around.

Sorry, I know you said this, but wanted to make it clear for others,
because it was something I was confused on in the beginning

    *And Thank You Gideon*

You have turned me into an Edutige NUT, thank you. I have their EIM 003 and
their ETM 008, both sound amazing

    • Gideon Shalwick

Ah cool thanks for clearing that up +Greg Savage! I wonder about the automatic default setting though… mine was always set to share my post with everyone in G+, until I unchecked it for one comment, and then for the next comment it was not automatically checked anymore.

Perhaps Google just remembers your last setting instead of the box being checked by default?

    • Gideon Shalwick

And also, every now and then I get someone leaving a comment here, but then it does not allow me to reply to them. Have you also seen that? And do you know why that happens?

    • Greg Savage

+Gideon Shalwick Youtube/Google remember settings… Could be possible. Try it now.

I've gone to a few channels where I've shared videos previously and when I go to other videos of theirs or the videos that I've shared it doesn't check the box.

I'm not sure why sometimes it's checked and other times it isn't, it is a bit strange, maybe it's under settings somewhere.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Re your questions related to production values for the above video… can you please enter them in the survey I asked for in my previous video? See here:

Do You Think You Can Help With This?

      But just briefly to answer…

      1. I shot this one using my Canon 60D DSLR camera. I would use my iPhone but unfortunately it does not work well with the lights I have. It makes the image flicker. And of course, with a DSLR, you have more control over the settings to get that perfect picture quality.

      2. I have 3 lights in this shot – one for my face, and two for the background. The one on my face is 110W I think (2x55W) and the other two are 110W (2x55W) each as well. So, altogether 330W in the room altogether? Room size is around 3m x 3m.

    • Gideon Shalwick

+Greg Savage Yeah very strange indeed are the ways of Google/YouTube haha!

    • Greg Savage

+Gideon Shalwick Yes, I run into this problem quite a few times and what I realized is the people that I cannot reply to don't have an active Google plus accounts.

I have to physically go to their profile page and a + and then their profile number and then within a few days sometimes a week their name starts popping up like the rest of ours.

If it's a banned account, like banned from your channel (or hit for spam) they can still show the reply on their profile posts, but you can't reply to them on your YouTube channel, the reply will just go to their profile page… this is what I've noticed within the last week because I've had some spammers on my channel

    • Greg Savage

+Gideon Shalwick Of course, I'll do that for you right now. Just fair warning you will now have 2 from me, don't mistake them for duplicates :)

    • Gideon Shalwick

      haha ok no worries!

    • Greg Savage

      +Gideon Shalwick Submitted :)

    • Gideon Shalwick

      Awesome thanks +Greg Savage!

    • Jinx Slush -/- Jinx Owner

How much time of your life did you waste writing that comment?

    • Greg Savage

+Jinx Slush -/- Jinx Owner speech to text so… maybe 20 seconds

    • Jinx Slush -/- Jinx Owner

      Denial.

    • CALL-ME-JD

hey dude you where in the vid

    • Greg Savage

      +CALL-ME-JD which one

  5. suremaine

    Good video.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Thank you +suremaine! What did you like most about the video?

  6. accent77

    Well now, let’s see it!

    • Gideon Shalwick

Haha sure thing… getting closer to those 100 comments now ;)

  7. Logan Mathis

    Awesome thank you!!!

  8. james gwatkin

Thanks so much this really helps me

    • Gideon Shalwick

+james gwatkin Ok great – that is good to know! Maybe I can create a video dedicated to creating thought provoking videos!

  9. Reading Through History

No one comments on my videos, at all.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Maybe my little tips will help? The case study should open yours eyes somewhat +Reading Through History! Let's hope this vid gets more than 100 comments so you'll be able to see it :)

    • Reading Through History

I might be too boring :-)

    • Gideon Shalwick

+Reading Through History Haha no I doubt that! Your target audience will never find your boring! If you do the right kind of targeting!

    • Reading Through History

Thanks to you, we have a killer intro now!

    • Gideon Shalwick

      Oh AWESOME!!!

  10. Verttech4

as far as the rough 4%, I can see that actually happening. I haven’t been
as active as I would like on my channel, but I was feeling discouraged (as
you mentioned early in the video). Lately I have been trying to be more
active, but for my kind of videos, I need actors. ._. the last group flaked
    out.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Ah yeah actors/talent – they are an interesting bunch to manage aren't they +Verttech4! All those ego's haha!

  11. Rohe Energie - Vegane Ernährung & Mehr

    Thanks :-)

  12. Chris Ducker

Great stuff, mate. Love the new style transitions, too.

  13. Ash Almond

Lots of negative comments ain’t any good, though :-)

  14. Sandi Eveleth

Ok, you did it! You got me to comment (& subscribe), Gideon! Great video as
    always :)

    • Gideon Shalwick

Thank you +Sandi Eveleth! Great to have you here… and thank you for all your support!

  15. Allismagic1 - Technology is fun

    very informative video. Thanks!

  16. Gideon Shalwick

Re the 20% of the fans doing 80% of the shares… SO TRUE! Great point +Sandi Eveleth!

  17. Infinite Waters (Diving Deep)

    Great work my friend :)

  18. Joel Phua

Hey Gideon, great content as usual and a nice new intro this time! Mind
telling me the brand of the lavalier microphone you used? :)

  19. mhassan840reviews

Thanks, this helped me a lot! ;)

    • mhassan840reviews

+Gideon Shalwick Mostly the part about the incentive, I probably will try and use that method to get some more comments. :)

  20. Nate Dalliard

Great video and it is really that simple.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Yup it really is +Nate Dalliard! It's not always intuitive though…

  21. Jarhead6

Great information! Definitely being engage and building a relationship with
your subs works pretty well! Thanks!

  22. jfnoxus

    Nice tips, thank you :)

  23. Metrotag

As the saying goes, ask and you shall receive, well so simple yet a lot of
    us don’t ask lol.

  24. tisme

Connection is the key and by commenting then almost every sense is
    involved. Nice video Gideon.

  25. AwakenedMarketer

    Very helpful info. Thanks Gideon!

  26. Jak N Blak

    100+ comments incoming!

  27. HalfEatenGamer

    Very helpful video :)

  28. OurFamilyTable

Really helpful! We are a very new channel so every little bit helps!

  29. Daniel Looper

    Comment, Like, Share!
Very interesting! Comments are important! and I see you are very active
in the comment reply’s 1. ask for a comment, ( so true!) 2. what is the
reason why? (to leave a comment). 3. Make them think people will want to
put their two cents in there ! awesome!. I am sure you are getting lots of
    comments on this video.

  30. Randy Barnes

Because you asked. Isn’t that simple? Ready to see how you got 7.4%
    comment rate

    • Gideon Shalwick

Yup – just asking is POWERFUL +Randy Barnes! And… I've just discovered another video with a 14% comment rate lol! So, I will include that in the case study video…

  31. David Dell

Some very good points Gideon and they can also be related to Audio pod
casting as well as comments for show show notes. So my question for you is
How do you think the ‘about’ content below peoples video effects comments?
and how can the ‘about’ content be used to gain more comments. Its not just
the video content when we talk about youtube.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Good point re podcasts +David Dell!

      Re your question…

I think you probably mean the "description" area below each video? Cos the about page is something different.

It's hard to tell how many people actually read the description area. But sure, I always ask people in there to leave a comment as well.

It can be particularly useful to leave instructions in there that you don't want to cover inside the video, to save time etc.

  32. Joseph Malgeri

    OK, this is comment 62.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Congrats! This is comment 207 ;)

  33. Trekking Turtle

Another interesting and helpful video. Thanks for sharing.

  34. Verena Czerny

Hi Gideon, I like your new Intro/Outro and Segueways! Seems like you’re the
    new YouTube Cyber Cowboy ;-)
I suppose the German audience is less ready to comment than the English.
Thank you for your excellent content! Greetings from Berlin.

    • Gideon Shalwick

The new YouTube Cyber Cowboy +Verena Czerny? Haha I love it! Feel free to comment in german… I just use the little translate tool to see what people from Germany writes :) And I even reply back in German too!

  35. Learnguitartunes

Great video and awesome tips as always Gideon… Thank you for sharing.

Asking your viewers to leave a comment is GOLD… I ask my audience to
request a song to learn on guitar or ukulele in the comment sections, and
this works a treat especially when I deliver their requested songs in a new
    video…

I also agree with replying to comments made on your videos, new viewers are
more likely to make a comment because they want YOU to reply back to them
    too!

    Thanks, Jack.

  36. Joni Lea

Come on guys, I’m number 59, only 41 comments to go to obtain more info
from Gideon, who has generously proven that his most valid statement works,
the offer of a gift is so enticing to us mere mortals. Thank you.

  37. Peter Demes

Hallo Gideon, besten Dank für das gute Video und ich wünsche viel Erfolg
    und mindestens 500 Comments!!

  38. FotostudioHeuvelrug

Great work Gideon. Another tip: make friends and follow other Youtube
channels, leave comments and invite others to leave comments on your
    channel.

  39. Bruce Avilla

    Digging that bump into/outro music!

    • Gideon Shalwick

Awesome thanks +Bruce Avilla! What about the animation itself? Any good?

  40. Celia Johnson

    You always give great tips

  41. CartooningGenius

Hi Gideon, great info on how to get more comments. Much appreciated!

  42. Jérémy Boyé

What a real great video. Thank you for this advices. The incentive might be
    the last tip ;D

    • Gideon Shalwick

You're very welcome +Jérémy Boyé! Was a pleasure creating this video cos I know how it will help my viewers!

  43. Tom Breeze

Great video as always Gideon! I often see people like RayWilliamJohnson
having a “comment question of the day” and he’ll get tons of comments from
his fans. And as we all know, social activity is what YouTube and Google
    love!

  44. stubzTV

Another good thing is to reply to all the comments (it doubles the comment
    count!)

  45. Steve Pickering

Thanks for your insight on comments and their importance as a measure of
    customer engagement.

  46. Manualideas Fancylooks

Love to see your new image , it looks clean and strong, very direct! But
the man in the black and white photo doesn’t look like you, it is kind of
creepy because I know it is you… and this is not a criticism, you know I
admire and respect you, it is just what I thought when I saw it and,
knowing you, I thought you may like to know our thoughts about it.

The other day something strange happened in one of my craft videos, I
uploaded the spanish version of it and I got some comments even when it had
only 10 views (normaly it goes like that). The next day I uploaded it in
English and when It had 639 views still had no comment at all!!! That is
not so normal and I don’t get why this happens…

  47. tostoday

I agree, bribery usually works in politics too, just kidding! The math
stuff made me dizzy though :)

  48. Lance Gross

+Gideon Shalwick Hey Gideon, great video! i would LOVE to know how you
create those really cool thumbnail images for your video… particularly
how you get the font/text to look the way it does. They’re just AWESOME!!
Do you have a video you’ve done that talks about that or is there a
particular program you use? Thanks :D

  49. Janice Sullivan

Nice video. It’s weird…I get emails from viewers saying that they liked
my videos and some questions but no comments? I also don’t have many views
:( Yes, it’s a tad frustrating but I love to make my tutorials.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Interesting +Janice Sullivan! Just checked out your channel briefly… do you use your face (talking head) inside your videos? That might help with engagement and getting people to comment. Also remember to ask people to comment :)

    • Janice Sullivan

Hi +Gideon Shalwick thanks for giving me some suggestions I really appreciate it.  I've never asked to comment so I'll try that.  I'll debate about being in front of the camera, lol!  :)

  50. Glendon Cameron

Good stuff, asking for comments seriously increased the number of people
    responding to my videos.

  51. Lyle H

You are right, it is about building relationships…that is what I am
learning on Youtube. You have always responded when I left a comment or
sent an email to you which makes you a ‘real’ person.

Personally, I only comment when I have something to add to a conversation.
I would rather have 100 good thought provoking comments than 500 ‘vanilla’
responses. So, commenting to a commenting video is weird and counter
    intuitive for me.

    • Gideon Shalwick

So true +Lyle H! Great quality comments definitely outweigh vanilla responses! And it also shows a measure of just how much your audience is engaged with you as a person! Great insight thanks!

  52. James Hullinger

Great information, this is the first time I have ever commented on a video.
I will have to give some thought to how to apply it to me.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Oh wow +James Hullinger! That is REALLY AWESOME to see you here commenting then! It's amazing getting people out of the woodwork a little and out here in the open to get the conversation going. In my view, it's one of the best ways to learn! Congratulations!

  53. Jonathan Krigel

great video! im always trying to get more views for my original rock songs
that I create, but never really seem to get many views or comments. I’ll
    try and incorporate your strategies!

    • Gideon Shalwick

Keep watching +Jonathan Krigel! I am planning some powerful content on this channel that will help you no doubt!

  54. Joe Hicks

Good information to pass on to clients who may not think video is working
for them due to lack of comments. Thank you Gideon.

  55. Steve Howard

Great info, Gideon. I have been surprised at the videos of mine that
generated the most comments and those that don’t.

  56. James Roughton

Great video as usually. It is always a pleasure seeing you.

  57. Ramesh Kumar Sharma

Useful tips. I like to add video view duration is self evidence of people’s
response upon if they liked a video with or without comment.

    • Gideon Shalwick

That's very true +Ramesh Kumar Sharma! Watch Time and Session Time are actually two VERY important metrics YouTube looks at for ranking your content. When it comes to ranking, comments do not seem as important. Of course I mainly use comments as a measure of engagement :)

  58. Kyle McMurry

Great stuff! I especially liked your use of the Pareto Principle.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Hey +Kyle McMurry – yeah the Pareto Principle is HUGE. After reading Perry Marshall's 80/20 Sales & Marketing book, a few pennies dropped for me :)

  59. waplogue1

    amazing video as always!

    • Gideon Shalwick

Thanks +waplogue1! What did you like most about the video?

  60. John Wallace

Nice one Gideon, always get good information from your videos.

  61. David Claussen

Gideon, I’m more than happy to leave a comment. Your info is FIRST CLASS!!
    Thanks for your free help!

  62. Visionary Motivation

Right on! Great video and comments really do drive home social proof…
second to none. Good work and comment back on any of my channels videos you
    might find interesting. Good stuff!

    • Gideon Shalwick

Yeah social proof is a major thing that comes through with comments. Thanks for stopping by also +VisionaryMotivation!

  63. Susan Evans

Sometimes people pick a fight with me in the comment section because I
mention God in my videos. There was this guy that was cussing at me for
reading the Bible to my kids. I had my husband debate the guy in the
comments on my YouTube video, and my views skyrocketed. Haha! Maybe I
should mention God more, just for the ratings to go up!

  64. Chris Fässler

Thanks for sharing Gideon, i’m number 93 :-), i’ll apply this in my videos,
    good stuff, thanks..!!!

  65. Jacques Pineault

Thank you Gideon. I sew that you have lots of comments on everyone of your
videos. So you’re a master on the subject because I have seen many trade
magazines online who have not received a single comment.

  66. Ivan du Plessis

dude, rock on… show us how

  67. Jerry David

Dammit! I feel obliged to leave some sort of comment now…seriously
though…great quality content as usual, Gideon.

    • Gideon Shalwick

LOL +Jerry David! It WORKED! Thanks for getting involved! Means a lot!

  68. OnlineBizTools

Three to go! Thanks for this one too.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Looks like we've gone over 100 already. Now for the next goal… 500!

  69. Alexandre Marinho

    Great content, as usual!

    • Gideon Shalwick

Thank you +Alexandre Marinho! What was your favorite part?

    • Alexandre Marinho

+Gideon Shalwick The way you get people to subscribe in exchange for content. I hope you get your 500 comments. :-)

  70. Master Hughes

you’ve got to get traffic first ask for comments great but if people cant
find the video it directly affect the amount of comments

  71. Ken Williams

Good advice to get more comments. Thanks

  72. Whatsit Productions Films

Thank you! Getting comments is so difficult these days here on YT, unless
of course people don’t like your content. Then of course they are only too
happy to let you know! But then again that drives more views too because
the hate mail shows up on their pages and then everyone wants to see what
got them so upset, lol :)

  73. Vincent DUBROEUCQ

Great tips. So simple. I’ll try them.

  74. Linden Blake

Hey Gideon..I love your video’s..thank you so much for all of the practical
instruction and advice. I was wondering what video editing software you use
    or would recommend? TY..(:

    • Gideon Shalwick

Hey +Linden Blake! Whenever I do the editing myself, I use ScreenFlow. Whenever I outsource, my team uses Adobe After Effects.

  75. Rob Hardie

Another interesting video. Like the new intro graphics.

  76. Tice29

Awesome video! Those tips are really usefull!

  77. Tom Gerry

    Another excellent video!

    • Gideon Shalwick

Thanks +Tom Gerry! Just checking… have you commented before?

  78. Chris King

I thoroughly enjoy your videos with all of the good information and hints
    you share. Way to go!

    • Gideon Shalwick

Ah +Chris King! It's been a while since I've seen a comment from you! Great to hear from you again!

  79. Caridorc Tergilti

    Hello, congrats, good video.

  80. Farhan Qureshi

wow you’ve got 111 comments at the time I viewed it – you’re more than a
fifth the way to 500. Thanks for the useful info

    • Gideon Shalwick

Oh yeah +Farhan Qureshi! Looking good so far! Let's hope we can get to that 500 comment mark so I can create that really cool course!

  81. Alma Torres

Your videos are very interesting. Thanks for all the useful and fun tips.

    • Gideon Shalwick

You're very welcome +Alma Torres! Have you commented on here before? Your name is kinda familiar, but I am not sure…

  82. Carolyn Lia

Hi Gideon, loved your video and want to hear more
Carolyn Lia (The Body Book System)

    • Gideon Shalwick

Sure thing +Carolyn Lia! Looks like we've hit the 100 comment mark! I'll definitely create that case study video. Now to hit the next target of 500 comments so I can create that course!

  83. Carlo Martin Guitar

    Thanks Gideon. Awesome.

  84. Gideon Shalwick

Hmmm… not necessarily! It depends on how engaged they are. The number of comments may just indicate how engaged your audience is. And the more engaged your audience, the easier it is to make stuff happen!

  85. Rockjockmatt

Commenting on a video about getting comments. I think the hardest part for
most people is just asking. I have worked with a lot of “sales” people in
the past that were afraid to ask for the sale. However, asking may not be
enough to get engagement. Sometimes you have to ask a question with a
    specific answer.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Oh yes totally – just asking is MASSIVE! And you're right, works for things other than just comments (and sales) too! I wonder why we (as humans) often don't ask? What are we so afraid of?

  86. packleader1215

I’m looking forward to that case study, Gideon.

  87. Tanya A

0:07 I love your new animation clip.. It looks great! Is that one from your
    company http://www.splasheo.com?

  88. Lewis Meltz

Slick. Direct and to-the-point. Who’d of ever thought of… “Just Ask?”

    • Gideon Shalwick

Haha yes exactly! Asking is so easy, and it delivers such amazing results! I wonder if a study has been done on asking people for specific things, and looking at the % of people saying yes compared to saying no. That would be a very revealing study indeed!

      It's probably been done…

  89. Chris Davis

I really appreciate your videos and also appreciate your removing the music
that I found distracting. Now…I know how much trouble you have gone to in
order to add the whoosing sound and the inserts. Sorry, but don’t like
them. Annoying. Would rather have simple text on the top, right of the page
    (to your left). Just sayin’

Looks as though you got more that 100 comments and the earliest was 15
hours ago. Noted you have promised more for 500. I’d say your experiment is
working. Glad your audience can help because you are one of the better
    guru’s in the market place.

  91. Gideon Shalwick

Thanks +Hoarding Profits! What did you like most about it?

  92. Gideon Shalwick

    Thank you +Tice29!

  93. Hoarding Profits

Very straight to the point, easy to understand and overall valuable content. Keep up the great work & thanks again for the video!

  94. Gideon Shalwick

Haha yeah true that +Whatsit Productions Films! I think it can go either way. But yes, it certainly seems like the negative human emotion has more power than the positive human emotion – just the way things are I suppose!

  95. Gideon Shalwick

Cheers +Ken Williams! Which tip did you like the best?

  96. Gideon Shalwick

That is very true +Master Hughes! I think, even before traffic, it starts with creating a really good video. From that, as people watch it, they will naturally want to comment and then share it with their friends too.

And of course, there are a number of marketing activities you can engage in to increase exposure to your videos and channel!

  97. Gideon Shalwick

Will do +Ivan du Plessis! Especially now that the video has way over 100 comments!!!

  98. Gideon Shalwick

It's all about engagement +Jacques Pineault! That's really what all this is about. Not more views… or even comments (or likes or whatever) for that matter… it's all about engagement with one's audience.

Once you have engagement, everything becomes easier!

  99. Gideon Shalwick

Awesome stuff +Chris Fässler! I KNOW it will work for you!

  100. Gideon Shalwick

Awesome +Glendon Cameron! Well that's some nice social proof that it works right there!!!

  101. Gideon Shalwick

Haha good one +tostoday! They're called incentives! Not bribery… sheesh! haha! Re the math stuff… yeah it even made my head spin! Next time I'll get a whiteboard out or something ;)

  102. Gideon Shalwick

Oh yeah you hit the nail on the head with comments being "a measure of customer engagement" +Steve Pickering! That's all it really is! Especially now that YT and Google does not pay all that much attention to number of comments as a way to rank videos.

  103. Gideon Shalwick

Thank you +Celia Johnson! Which tip did you like best today?

  104. Gideon Shalwick

Sie sind sehr willkommen Peter! Ja, lässt hoffen wir auf 500 Kommentare bekommen, das wäre wirklich cool! Das ist fast wie eine Party haha!

  105. Gideon Shalwick

Haha thanks +Joni Lea! Us mere mortals certainly like gifts ;)

  106. Gideon Shalwick

I sure am getting lots of comments on this one +Daniel Looper! It's fun getting back to people. But in general I limit it to around 24hrs after uploading the video for each video. Otherwise I would ONLY spend time on replying to comments.

So I reward fast commenters for taking action fast too ;)

  107. Gideon Shalwick

You're welcome +jfnoxus! What did you like most?

  108. Gideon Shalwick

Awesome +mhassan840reviews! What did you find most useful?

  109. Lance Gross

+Gideon Shalwick Actually I was referring to the custom thumbnails you use. So when you upload a video you have the option of uploading a custom thumbnail rather than choose one of the 3 random ones they offer. I was wondering how you went about creating those. Does that make sense?

  110. Paul Taras Wolkowinski

Is that really you in the intro & outro????
Never asked for comments before, just about to start, going to be an
    interesting exercise.

  111. Auguste Hinrichs

Thanks for the help. One question: how to add key words and tags to get
more exposure and ultimately more subs?

  112. Greg Knight

Gideon! Looking forward to your videos as always! Nice to have you back
in Youtube land, and looking forward to your case study, and maybe even a
    course!

  113. Sharon Beck

Well of course we will all leave a comment. What I want to know is how to
get rid of the photo that shows my friend playing a horn instead of a photo
    of me. Hmmmmm

    • Gideon Shalwick

Ah – you can change that on your Google+ profile settings :)

  114. Sharon Beck

Thank you so much Gideon. I did it and it worked. Yippee!!!

  115. WavesDVDcom: Relax Music Waves Videos

So, does youtube count your comments back to us? Probably, thus you reply
to all of us and double your comments. I find posting more and longer
videos to be more effective than responding to everyone. I do answer
questions, less so now since youtube buried comments. YT wants you to
watch not chat. I use to respond but not so much now, and yet my views are
going up just fine – focus on what’s important – key wording is way more
important than comments and watching what your competition is doing well
and not so well… thats my 2 cents… back to editing…8-) and shooting
on the beach with my new GH4 in 4k.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Hah great comments +WavesDVDcom: Relax Music Waves Videos! Yeah comments (alone) certainly does not help you rank better or even get more views. For me, it's more of a measure of engagement with my audience and building a solid relationship with them.

And of course the social proof that comes from that can serve very useful.

I totally agree with you – YT wants us to watch for longer. They made that VERY clear in the YT Certification I completed last recently. Watch time and Session TIme were two very important keywords used in the training.

And that also does not mean that just longer videos can increase watch or session time. It comes down to creating more engaging content that keeps our viewers longer on YT. That basically seems to be the driving force as far as I can understand.

Thanks for your very valuable insights!

  116. WavesDVDcom: Relax Music Waves Videos

Oh and next time hide your orange note pad behind the powerbook. ;-) or
get some flash cards to read from. LOL.

    • Gideon Shalwick

      Yeah sure thing haha!

  117. Mayor Jackal

Hey, your videos are fabulous. Thanks for posting.

    • Mayor Jackal

Easy answer: The part when you spoke.

Right answer: Social Proof, it's a good term. Getting comments IS more important than raw view numbers.

I have subbed to your channel and I'll be reviewing your videos thoroughly.

Cool accent, where are you from?

    • Gideon Shalwick

+Mayor Jackal I'm from South Africa originally, but left around 20 years ago!

    • Mayor Jackal

      A wise choice

  118. Alex M

Thanks again Gideon, I love the quality of your videos. Look forward to
    more content.

  119. Uday Jataniya

    hy, nice video… nice tips…. :-)

  120. Kieran McDonogh

Comments are a brilliant social proof tool for any video content creator.
And you my friend have cracked the code on this one. 248 comments from 418
views – you’re currently in double digits for your comment/view ratio =
    59%. You’re a bloody legend Gideon (flex)

    • Gideon Shalwick

Haha cheers for stopping by +Kieran McDonogh! Always great to see you here! When are you coming to visit next huh?

  121. Gideon Shalwick

Thank you +Mayor Jackal! Which part did you like most?

  122. Daniel OBrien

how do you make that little subscribe button with the drop out banner on
the top right of your video?

  123. Ronnie Geyer Chmura

As usual tons of value in your videos Gideon. I will start using insentives
in my videos from now on. Let’s bump this over 500 for you so that FREE
course will come out. Cheers for always valuable content. Your the man!!!

  124. Mike Lally

Cheers, good advice! Nice shirt, too!

  125. Lina W

Most videos of 3000 views have faaar from 120 comments so it really takes
to do it right! I’ve never gotten that many ^^.

  126. jfnoxus

The explanation about the comments, the bit before the tips :)

  127. Memphis Urban News

thanks for the video . I always enjoy your channel

  128. wolfdaddy1974

Thought provoking video Gideon. Thanks for the tips, and insights!

  129. SoloWise

Oh I left a comment, guess I’ve changed from which percentage group I
    belonged to

  130. Simin Osa

Gideon I just love your production

  131. Sharon Beck

Thanks so much Gideon. I’m going to start blogging again on my new website
for Seniors and it’s great that I learned so much from you and Yaro back in
the day. Glad to see you are still posting.

  132. Michael Wright

Thank you for the tip. I appreciate the practical application. I’m about
to launch my own video tutorials very soon. See you on the web!

  134. Gerlinde Tratz

Excellent video and tips as always Gideon. Sure I leave a comment for you
and I hope, that you will complete the 500 …

  135. J Savannah

Love some tips about creating more engaging content. I took a chance this
week and posted an opinion that I know is contrarian and did get a comment.
So it worked, but also made me a little anxious wondering if I put people
    off.

  136. naalsoegat

591 views and 277 comments! This must be some kind of record!

  137. Christopher Binnix

I am curious to know how you got the background of your video looking that
with the new gradient white and grey.

  138. Angus McDonald

7% is good. Curious – why do you have the laptop in the video when you are
using another device to look at?

  139. Mayor Jackal

    +Gideon Shalwick
I thought so. My best friend is from Bloemfontein – I hear the similarity in both your voices.  Thanks for the videos, they are EXTREMELY useful!

  140. Gideon Shalwick

Oh cool – I'm from Bloem too! Left when I was 16 :)

  141. Steve Roe

Neat incentive idea and I liked how you asked people to view toward the end
    of the video.

  142. Robert Mclennan

One thing I just found out is that to comment on a YouTube video, one must
have a Gmail account. Now that is done, I believe that to get comments on
your (any) videos have to be designed for interaction rather than just
    teaching.

  143. Juan Felipe Afanador

Good Video !! Any tip on how to create “Thought Provoking Content” for High
    Technology people?
    Thank you very much.

  144. לאה סידן

To get more comments on video first of all give good and valuable content
like you do, than ask. provoke and incentive to comments.

  145. bomshell30

Thanks for making this I am getting this problem people are not commenting
I get frustrated sometime wondering why I put so much effort on my video
now than before so please help thanks!!!!

  146. Mayor Jackal

    Where are you now?

  147. Gideon Shalwick

    Australia!

  148. StephaniehasStories

My big pet peev about this whole commenting thing is that people often just
want the comments and they don’t really care about the people behind that
comment. So often I hear people say “like, comment and subscribe”…but
it’s like why?? why should I just randomly comment? you’ve given me nothing
    to comment about…

I respond to every single comment I get…even if it’s just a “thanks for
watching” or “you’re the best”…because i know what it’s like to be a
viewer and get a comment from someone you watch…it’s the least I can do
since they’re giving me their time…allotting time out of their day to
    watch my videos!!

  149. Adam Bean

Hey Gideon, we all know that attention span’s are short these days. So my
question would be, should I ask for comments earlier rather than later in a
the video? Or do you go down the track of, later in the video I want to ask
    your opinion on something?

    Cheers Beanie

  150. Adam Bean

Social proof via comments = more Authority for you! #Biztip #Biztalk
    #sunshinecoast #socialmediatipsandtricks

  151. PJ Brunet

    1. Observing 50,000 comments on my blog, I noticed people pile on comments
on top of comments when they see other people doing it. People want to be
part of something popular. Hardly anyone wants to break the ice and leave
the first comment. But if they see other people do it, they’re much more
    likely to join in.
    2. Google’s algorithm thinks this way too. Comments signal the Google
motherbrain: “Hey this is important!” That content rises up Google’s
rankings, which leads to more comments. The critical thing is the first
few comments get the snowball rolling into an avalanche.
    3. I’ll propose two more rules of thumb. 1 out of 33 posts (blogs, videos,
etc.) will NOT go viral. 1 out of 77 posts will go viral in a BIG way.
Metaphorically, you’re sticking tiny little needles into the massive body
of the Internet, hoping to hit a nerve that makes people want to
participate. While you’re missing the target, you’re building up context
and establishing yourself as an expert in your own unique way. On the 77th
try you’ll see the hard work pay off.

Why does this matter? For blogs it’s especially important. Comments =
fresh, relevant content. Lots of comments = lots of fresh, relevant
content = higher search engine rankings. Higher rankings = even more
comments = even more pageviews = even more subscribers = even more ad
impressions = even more sales and on and on.

Then you start a travel blog and you’re on permanent vacation ;-)
    Half-kidding! Haha.

  152. Name Sake Pictures

I am definitely also using this for Facebook! :) Thank you!

i feel I have done everything. and the last time I had an chanel I got more
comments on my dresses desings and I know what I did to get comments was
working. now its different I don’t know maybe I need to make more vedios
but I don’t get no bad comments or good. I have got one comment on one
vedios so maybe I should make vedios of me doing what im doing in that
vedio and I do say leave me comments good or bad.

  209. bane rama

    cool site

  210. Gideon Shalwick

Yeah the 80/20 thing is so interesting. And it pops up everywhere. Who would have thought one could apply it to YouTube comments too ;)

  211. Gideon Shalwick

Great stuff +james gwatkin! What did you find most helpful?

  212. james gwatkin

+Gideon Shalwick to make your videos thought provoking

  213. Gideon Shalwick

I think it depends – sometimes negative comments and feedback can actually help your video go viral. That's the thought provoking stuff I mentioned in the video. Hmmm… Rebekah Black's "Friday" song comes to mind hehe…

  214. Ash Almond

Really? I always just delete all those negative comments..

  215. Gideon Shalwick

Yeah… it's a balance to keep. And it really depends on quite a few factors… one being your overall strategy. And perhaps another being how sensitive you are to negative feedback…

  216. Gideon Shalwick

Thanks +Allismagic1 – Technology is fun!

  217. james gwatkin

    yeah that would be awesome

  218. Gideon Shalwick

Yes! So I'll definitely be creating that case study video. And if this video gets over 500 comments, I will create a whole course on how to create engaging videos, and submit it here on YouTube :)

  219. Gideon Shalwick

Haha ok cool – your previous comment definitely had a role in my reducing the music for this one +Chris Davis! I'll have a think about the whooshing sounds… I was not sure about them :)

  220. Gideon Shalwick

Hey +Tanya A! Re the animation clip… it's a 100% custom one. We do offer those at Splasheo in some cases, but they are a lot more expensive and take a lot longer to create. If you're interested, please send the team an email at support@splasheo.com:)

  221. Gideon Shalwick

Thanks +Rob Hardie! Great to hear you like the intro graphics – it's a bit of a test :)

  222. Gideon Shalwick

    Awesome thanks!

  223. Gideon Shalwick

Hah that is very interesting +Susan Evans! The controversial topics ALWAYS get more interaction! There are many religion/anti-religion channels that get A TON of attention… simply because they are of a more controversial topic.

You need a heart of steel to be able to deal with it though :)

  224. Gideon Shalwick

Awesome thank you so much +David Claussen!

  225. Gideon Shalwick

Ah cool – thanks for that!

  226. Gideon Shalwick

Awesome +James Roughton! You're becoming a very familiar face in the commenting area here :) Great stuff!

  227. Gideon Shalwick

Yeah… A LOT of people watch the videos, but NEVER comment… for whatever reason.

  228. Gideon Shalwick

Ah you mean the video intro at around 0:07? That was done by my video editor in Adobe After Effects. I would not have a clue how to create that haha!

  229. Gideon Shalwick

ah gotcha +Lance Gross! for today's video I just used Keynote on Mac as an experiment. But a much easier tool is TubeSlicer – my review of the tool is here: TubeSlicer Review – Create STUNNING YouTube Thumbnails In Less Than A Minute!

  230. Gideon Shalwick

Interesting you mention that about my face +Manualideas Fancylooks! I kinda felt the same way… a filter has been applied to it to make it fit with the rest of the design, but you're right, it does not look like me as much! Will see what we can do about it – thanks for the feedback!

  231. Manualideas Fancylooks

+Gideon Shalwick I guess a burnt image like the typical high contrast Che Guevara style of portrait, plain black and white shapes, will fit perfectly your new image, type of Stenciled portrait. That is not difficult to make out of a good photo with natural light contrast. But that is only my suggestion, I am a graphic designer and that is what I thought, hope you understand this is just a suggestion. Anyway, I like how you reinvent your style, you are always so "going forward" I see your videos to see if I get caught on that motion as well.

  232. Gideon Shalwick

Yeah that's a very smart strategy for engagement +Tom Breeze! Thanks for stopping by again – GREAT to see you here! Looking fwd to our chat next week!

  233. Gideon Shalwick

Yes +FotostudioHeuvelrug! Great extra advice – thanks!

  234. Gideon Shalwick

Both points so true +Learnguitartunes! And the best part for me is getting people involved more so that they learn better as well!

  235. Gideon Shalwick

    You're welcome +Trekking Turtle

  236. Gideon Shalwick

Great stuff +OurFamilyTable! Keep watching my channel – lots of cool things planned!

  237. Gideon Shalwick

Totally smashed it already +Jak N Blak! Next target is 500 ;)

  238. Gideon Shalwick

Ah yeah great point +tisme – by commenting, people have to get out of their comfort zone somewhat. And that engages a lot of senses for sure!

  239. Gideon Shalwick

    Yes totally +Jarhead6!

  240. Bruce Avilla

Honestly? The swoosh sounds became annoying after the second one.  Also the circular swiping is an unusual path and felt gimmicky.  Not a natural flow.  But…love that bump music segment!!

  241. Gideon Shalwick

ok cool – thanks for the honest feedback! You're the second person not to like the swoosh sounds… and after reviewing it myself, it's totally annoying! So I am definitely removing those sounds – thanks!

  242. Gideon Shalwick

Awesome to be back +Greg Knight! And as you may see in the coming few weeks and months… I will be back in a different capacity. Secret squirrel stuff!

  243. Gideon Shalwick

Cool question +Auguste Hinrichs – mind adding that to my survey here?

Do You Think You Can Help With This?

  244. Gideon Shalwick

Haha yeah +Paul Taras Wolkowinski – but I think I might change it for future vids. It does not look like me really ;)

  245. Steve Howard

    +Gideon Shalwick
The vids that I thought would have the most interest didn't, yet simple ones that were sort of done on impulse are still generating views and comments years later.

I guess it depends a little on the type of content too +Lina W! Maybe some content just naturally requires more questions/comments whereas others don't. In either case, I reckon you should be able to involve your audience more using some simple tweaks :)

  251. Lina W

+Gideon Shalwick Absolutely it does! I think this about the 4% may go more for videos when someone is talking and discussing something. So we can't really make a 1-1 comparison between different fields. But that sure doesn't mean that things could not get better  :)

  252. Learnguitartunes

That's the crucial part, your audience benefits and learns more… Have a great weekend.

  253. Jonathan Krigel

    thank you!

It may be that you're not solving a big enough problem +RT Green. Have you done any research on whether there actually is a need for the kind of videos you're creating?

  257. RT Green

No, I haven't done any research really. But a lot of people have similar videos with lots of views, likes, and comments. Not sure what's different about mine.

  258. Gideon Shalwick

    Do collaborations with them?
