How To Make Money While “Not Working”

Sometimes you get to a point where you simply have to “not work”. Well, actually, I’ve been known to say that I don’t really work in any case, and that it’s more like “play” to me!

Even so though, sometimes it’s necessary to take somewhat of a break to help “recharge the batteries”.

But, it does not mean you have to stop earning some nice money while doing it! And inside today’s video, I reveal how you can achieve such a marvelous thing ;)

Leave your comment below, unless you’re not cool.

Keeping it simple!

  1. [..YouTube..] You need a sexy right hand man. *hint*

  2. [..YouTube..] Great video Gideon!
    Keep up the great work.

    • Hi Gideon,

      Can only echo this comment.

Life comes in cycles and yes this is a reminder on how we should treat not only our business but remember by looking after ourselves! By taking rest periods and reflecting on our past work, not only refreshes our stamina but also is the reminder of “If you don’t know where you have come from – You will not know where you are going”.

Over the festive period it may be a good time to take out the past two years diaries and refresh and use some of the information now collecting dust.

  3. [..YouTube..] Great video Gideon as always!! Do you follow Roger Hamilton by any chance?? Wink and Grow Rich is one of his books and he talks about the same thing as you do!

    Have a great day!

    Nick

  4. [..YouTube..] Liked and sincerely voted. Your statement very supportive in term of explaining about the flow system in blogging. I mean a blogger must understand the circle and cycle in blogging world.

Related to your video content (my personal opinion), a blogger should understand for why The Blogger Team introduced OpenSky to all users and on Dec. 1, 2010; Google established GAN (Google Affiliate Network)..

I’ve read “A Bully Finds a Pulpit on the Web,” by David Segal in The New York Times.

  5. [..YouTube..] Gideon,
    This is a great video.
Yes it is possible to work very hard and still be successful. But a vacation works too :-) .

Yes, I’ve recently started to look at what I have and using it to its full potential and so far so good.

  6. [..YouTube..] I really liked the video. What you say is right stuff.

  7. [..YouTube..] Gave you a thumbs up Gideon! db (-:

  8. [..YouTube..] Gideon you’re always coming up with something interesting to say!
    Thumbed up for sure!
    Johnny

  9. [..YouTube..] Stage 4..I thought you said Risk…. And Risk makes sense to me. You can Rest when you die. Risk to me means to try something new, to change or innovate and seek out new markets. Then repeat steps 1-4…What do you say we do a collab effort and remake this video?

Thanks for your thoughts Gideon and I really respect your modern business ideas! You challenge my mind.

  10. [..YouTube..] Hey man, you look different – at first I thought it was just the haircut but you’re obviously just more rested, hehe…

  11. [..YouTube..] With my videos, I make money while I sleep.

  12. Great info and very timely for this season in which a lot of projects wrap up and we get ready for next year — thanks, Gideon!

  13. Love this!! I chuckled in the beginning when you talked about not being able to go potty-ing with your friends ( until I put on my Australian ears -duh!) Anyway I talk a lot about seed, time and harvest, or sowing and reaping in our businesses & livelihoods. I love the way you describe the nurturing phase of that process. Keep it up. :)

    • Gideon Shalwick

      Hey Gina

It’s probably more of a South African accent lol!

You should hear me try and say “Park the car in the carpark”! It sounds more like “Pork the cor in the corpork”! hehehe!

      Gideon

  14. I agree with you on the 4 stages you listed. But I think there is a 5th. That is even a greater responsibility than all the rest. And that is once you have done all the things you listed in the rest stage, Recruiting or even better promoting a good person and passing your hat on that job to that person. Then you are free to go on to greater things. This is the next level I believe you will be looking at on the great work you are doing.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Ah recruiting! Now that is something I am already working on!

      Thanks for the reminder Mark!

      Talk soon!

      Gideon

  15. [..YouTube..] Great content and principles to live by!

  16. Thank you very much for this analysis Gideon (and for this video posted tommorow ;) ).

I’m almost new to blogging (since March 10), on the French blogosphere, and your messages and those from Yaro have helped me a lot!

You advise to re-focus on what is essential… not only for our business… but also in our lives. This metaphor is smart.

I hope I’ll reach the same success ;)

  17. Great video Gideon. I’d love to hear more about the 4 stages.

  18. Gideon,

Your videos look terrific, are you using the DSLR cameras? Thanks for the video, the info you put out is great, useful, and motivational…

    Matt

    • Gideon Shalwick

Yeah I used my Canon T2i 550D for this recording, along with my Edirol voice recorder.

I am still quite amazed at how good it looks! Great camera for these shorter type of videos!

      Gideon

  19. Gideon,

You said a mouthful. I’m looking forward to the rest stage. What is it about IM that causes us to feel we have to constantly be “doing” something?

    Cheers

    • Gideon Shalwick

I think we get “addicted” to feeling connected Brenda!

That’s my theory at least :)

And that is also why I think something like Facebook has become so incredibly popular so quickly!

In the past, people would be happy to just chill while queuing at the supermarket, or even chat to some other folks. Nowadays, everyone (including me) just check their Facebook updates on their phones!

Hmmm… even less time for rest and reflection!

      Gideon

  20. Excellent information in order to have a successful business we need to work hard to make it grow and nurture it daily. Eventually with all our hard work we will make a nice income to take a little rest and enjoy life. Thank you Gideon for your video and support to use to move forward and use the 4 stages of business growth to succeed in our business goals and dreams.

  21. I’m cool like Fonzy Gideon :-)

Great post, concepts that are so easily ignored!

  22. Nicely done, Gideon. Your concepts were communicated well. And, I agree with all four of them wholeheartedly. Regarding rest, I view it as “recreation” because “recreation” allows one to fully recover in order to “re-create” one’s future.

    Thanks for this timely message!

  23. I am afraid I am always in the reaping stage! This is one of the things I really need to work on, work/life balance. When you love what you do it’s hard to shut it down. I am always watching the clock wishing I had just one more hour. Live and learn I guess, thanks for another great video Gideon!

  24. Very nice video blog Gideon… superb production quality.
Good recap of the bigger picture of launching a marketing campaign online.

Good to be reminded of optimization…. I think it is especially important to go back and be sure you have great [optimized] tracking methods, and analyze your tracking thoroughly to make sure your marketing strategy is meeting your goals.

Also… a great time to review your customer service areas. Did you overlook disgruntled clients, that you can now take care of? Did you see a pattern in your comments or customer’s feedback that will offer you insights to improve your deliverables, your website ease of use?

And resting… what a great concept. ;) Your video reminds me there is a beginning, and if not an end, certainly a healthy pause… that makes the whole project seem manageable.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Some nice extra points here Gabriella! THANKS!

      Gideon

  25. [..YouTube..] @jtunkelo Dont mention the haircut! I think I need to sue my hairdresser lol!

    Gideon

    • … yea, it took me a while to figure out why you looked so different.. I am like is he so relaxed he gained weight? ;) – is it the camera angle? now i got it… it is the haircut…. I had someone ruin my hair about a year and a half ago… but my hair was mucho longer than yours… yours will have a short distance to grow out! ;)

  26. [..YouTube..] @ericsurf6 Hey Eric! Sure thing, I would love to do a collab! I reckon you’re an amazing example of someone who really knows how to leverage YouTube! So, something like this could get really interesting…

    Gideon

  27. Gideon….
Great reminder. I have been self employed for many years and this model of sewing, nuturing, reaping and resting is a valuable perspective. It certainly has repeated over and over in my office.
    Thanks for the great video…

  28. Love your stuff Gideon. I’m a bit of an implementation “geek” and I am getting a ton of highly qualified leads and customers everyday thanks to your system.
I like the idea of simplifying as sometimes I feel that my clients are not 100% sure of what products/services they should invest in.

I’d love your advice on this and I think simplification might be what you suggest!

Cheers and keep up the uber cool work.

    Cheers,

    Tom Breeze

    • Gideon Shalwick

      Hey Tom

For me so far, there has been no better power than focusing on the right thing. Sounds like you already know about The Hedgehog concept – that’s a great place to start for finding your focus.

And with this kind of focus, simplification is a natural outcome :)

      Gideon

      • Tom

        Hey Gideon,

Thanks for getting back to me – really appreciated. I was in Brisbane recently for my honeymoon and loved it! It beat snowy London right now!

I love these 4 steps and I like the idea of the 5th – delegation/recruitment. This is my next step along with simplification!

        Cheers,

        Tom

    • @tom

“I like the idea of simplifying as sometimes I feel that my clients are not 100% sure of what products/services they should invest in.”

This is so true, part of being a consultant is holding your clients hand and providing subtle direction.

      • Hi Chris,

Yes, I have made it much more simple already and I think this is something I should have done some time ago!

I’ve created a 1-year speaker development plan and it’s selling like hot cakes!

        Cheers,

        Tom

  29. Good sense tips for my New Year resolutions! BTW: how do you get your YouTube comments appearing in the blog Comments? A plugin perhaps?

    Clive

    • Gideon Shalwick

      Hey Clive

It’s the YouTube Comments Plugin – just google it :)

      Gideon

  30. Hi Gideon
I have been watching you stuff for a while and the quality continues to get better. It is clear that your presentation skills improve with practice-smooth.

Looks like you are resting quite comfortably :)

Every successful business person I know, takes long vacations to unwind and re-energize. Solid points on all fronts
    Thanks
    Mark

  31. Great video. It’s true, that even if your “play” is your work, you still need rest to rejuvenate. As long as you’re having fun doing what you love, the money will always follow.

  32. Great perspective, Gideon. I very much agree that most people forget about the resting phase, which is so extremely important if we don’t want to burn out. I like your idea that the resting period may be used for simplifying and optimizing, as long as we still get to rest ;-) .

I love the example of Yaro’s month long trip abroad and that he actually made more money in that period. I believe that may even be more important than most of us are aware; it’s often when we let go, relax and enjoy something else that things really start happening :-)

  33. miep

You are such an inspiration as always

  34. Hi, Gideon!
As someone just getting a business started, it occurs to me that the rest stage could also be used for looking for partners and other support – a time to move from doing much of the work yourself to creating that team that will make your business better and the whole process more fun. Would love to hear another time how you and others prepare if you’re planning to travel for a month or more… do you find another like-minded soul to cover some aspects? what is your ‘must do’ checklist while you’re traveling? Do you do anything specific to get your business ‘ready’ before you take off? Really appreciate what you do. Nora

    • Gideon Shalwick

      Ah Nora…

You should stay connected here, because my friend Yaro Starak may be releasing something along those lines within the next few months.

I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag, but there are some really cool stuff coming up in this space…

      Keep your eyes peeled!

      Gideon

  35. Hey Gideon,

Have followed you and your work, both as a customer and spectator enjoying the journey along the way. The internet moves so fast and provides a leverage platform like no other, and the results of what you’re reaping are testament to that after only 4 years for you as an Internet Marketer.

Will be interested to see what your version of “rest” looks like and how you move forward from your 2010 success, and into 2011.

    All the best my friend,
    Kieran

    • Gideon Shalwick

      Hey Kieran

Thanks! It’s great to know you’ve been “with me” all this time!

It’s certainly been a very interesting ride, and I reckon I may write a book about it some time!

Some cool stuff coming up over the next few months – I have a bunch of products complete that I will slowly be releasing – or at least that is kinda the plan!

      Gideon

  36. Dawie

    Inspirational as always, thanks Gideon

  37. Gid,

I so needed to be reminded of those four things. Thank you.

  39. badhabitz69

    Great video Gideon!
    Keep up the great work.

  40. Interesting, Gideon–thanks! This relates very closely to sigmoid curves in the business cycle, especially if the rest period does contain the elements you mention of optimization and simplification. And ericsurf6′s comment is valid–this is the point where you take risks, innovate, or die. And enjoy time in your tropical forest of a back yard!

  41. Love the 4 Stages, Gideon. I put them together with the steps mentioned in a great book called “The 4 Agreements”. A wonderful fusion!

    Peace,

    Cory

    • Gideon Shalwick

Wow this sounds interesting Cory – where can I get a hold of your book?

Sounds like just the think I would like to be reading!

      Gideon

  42. Thanks Gideon
I think many of us a still in the busy stage, or even trying to make our mark online.
I myself and many others are hoping that we can finally get a solid start and make it to the rest stage, that means we have already reaped!
    Have a great Day

  43. I am still waiting for the projects i have to actually start working, the law of entropy seems to occur when you push hard at something, and you sow without seeing any results that give you a direction for naturing them. Pehaps that part of what you are saying, go back and look at what you have started and see what you can do to maximize the project before starting something new.

  44. [..YouTube..] @GideonShalwick the haircut is fine :-) .

  45. Hi Gideon,

    Such wise advice.

I have been diligent to protect our weekend time with the family and actually will frequently turn the computer off, but I’ve not taken a period of time off in a long while.

I ended up hurting my back a little over a week ago and I have not able to sit at the computer for any length of time. While at first I was frustrated, I realize what a give I’ve been given, to have been forced to relax and take some time to rest.

It’s given me amazing perspective being able to step back and look at all I was doing. I’ve created a list of things I’m tweaking and a list of projects I’ll be focusing on. I will focus on simplifying things as per your advice!

Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom!
    Heather

  46. Hi Gideon,
    Love your plant demo.
I have been a farmer daughter and wife now a massage practitioner and an online coach the phases are exactly as the growing wheat crop on the farm and in my businesses
Rest is one thing that flows when I just love doing what I do.
Just more time playing and having fun

  49. Vin Larios

Hi Gideon, thanks for all those great ideas that you share, Vin

  50. Very Zen! and true. if soil (as when farming) needs time to rest
then it surely makes sense that we as humans need to rest also.
There is a change of crops in farming also so that different nutrients
are used by the new crop planted in a new area. So…..it makes all
the sense in the world to me and thanks a heap.

  51. Viktor

Yeah, Gideon, you look a rested now…seems like more relaxed…

    Enjoy your good tips!

.How long are you going to be in stage four?

How did you make blur background?

Are you using nifty fifty lens in shooting this video?

    Thanks

Great information again Gideon. I wasnt really aware of the 4 cycles – you have explained them very well. Thankyou.

  60. Diana

    Thanks Gideon,

Yes I would definitely be interested in hearing more about the sowing, nurturing and reaping stages!!!

  61. Arike

    Hi Gideon,

As always you are a breath of fresh air. You are ever positive and upbeat and what you say seems just common sense – like I’ve always known it but have needed to be reminded. Of course what you’re doing is also reminding us to take action and that it is completely down to us what results we get from the efforts we make.

I like the way that what you have laid out fits nicely with nature’s cycle SOWING, NURTURING, REAPING and RESTING. Right now its winter here in the UK and for gardeners its pretty difficult to do much of the first 3, resting is mandatory especially when there’s heavy snow and frosts to underscore the season.

Please keep on bathing us in your example, wisdom and positivity and I’m sure that it’ll rub off on to others (especially me) eventually. Much appreciated.

    Arike

  62. [..YouTube..] Nice video Gideon. I would definitely love to see videos on sowing, nurturing and reaping. Looking forward for more of your videos.

By the way, Nice haircut :-)

  63. Good thoughts, Gideon. I’d like to hear more about what you mean when you say “optimize” what you already have. I’m assuming you don’t mean SEO. But that you mean take what’s working and focus on that more? I hope you’ll let me know what you mean by “optimize”.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Ah… there are MANY things to say about optimization… and while SEO cold form one small part of it, it’s really only a tiny part of the picture.

In this case, optimization will more refer to looking at my marketing funnel, and figuring out exactly how effective it is, and then increasing the conversation rate for each stage.

Eg from Leads to Lower Entry Products to Medium Cost Products to High Ticket items…

And also figuring out where to offer all my products in the best possible “locations” on my “web real estate”.

More to come on this later…

      Gideon

  64. [..YouTube..] @prajwalshinde maybe for my next video my haircut will be a bit less obvious… hehehe!

    • Gideon Shalwick

Starting with your bedroom is a great idea!

Actually, I am serious! When I clean my bedroom or office, I often get into a really good mindset for getting some great work done in my business.

There’s just something about having a tidy place that makes me work super well!

Excellent video, very good points, i face these chanellenges everyday, and i only over come them with good planning and structing the steps i will take.

I think planning is so important before you even start on conducting any work, whether it be creating blog or internet marketing.

Mapping everything out to avoid things being messy, and when working on several projects i generally find having a standard flow process make life easier, less stressful and manage and maintain every aspect of what business.

Gideon you are right on target with your advice…coming from the corporate world, we would follow a formula very similar to your 4 phases. The final step after every launch of a new product, the team would take time to reflect and celebrate success before moving on to the next product. Very similar to your rest stage. During this time we would all review what went well so we can make sure we do that on the next program and what didn’t go so well so we can improve on those things. Many times this would involve process improvements (similar to optimize and simplify). Finally we take time to celebrate our success and hard work. This is a very critical step that allows for the team to recharge before we take on the next big launch. Teams that skipped this step would often times be burned out and not as productive. This entire process was our new product life cycle. Looking forward to your next videos…Thanks so much!

  85. GideonShalwick

nothing wrong with being geeky in that way Jane! hehehe

  86. Ron Ruggles

    Excelent advise!

  87. Gideon
I love the reference back to nature. So true and simple to understand. What is right for Mother Nature must be applicable elsewhere in our fast lives so far removed from the earth. The land must indeed rest – lie fallow – for nutrients to be replenished in the earth in order for the next crop to thrive. Ask any farmer. Great analogy!
Only thing is, how is the simplification/tidying up process rest? In my daily experience with a toddler and stuff that has a life force of its own in terms of growing and spreading, tidying up feels far from rest!!
    Rebecca

  88. It’s a good video of value.
Thank you for sharing good stuff.
Btw, you must have gained some weight.

  89. Pat

Thanks for the good advise Gideon. Especially re: optimizing what you have already created. I do a lot of writing and have produced a number of videos, till need to take the time to produce alternatives for my subscribers: for example, my report can be broken up into a number of chapters and then used to create a series of podcasts for itunes distribution. Another idea is to break out the report into a slide show which could be distributed on youtube…. the big thing for me is finding the time. In addition to blogging I am running a graphic design firm full time… so it’s a matter of priorities. Thanks for the good advice.. .just need time to do it all.

  90. Kareena

    What products do you sell?

  91. Hi Gideon,
Great video and very timely for this time of year as we are nearing the break and some time to actually REST-SIMPLIFY-OPTIMISE.
yes we’d love to know more and also would love a challenge for Xmas or leading to Xmas – create some videos around a theme etc.
Keep up the amazing work and keep smiling,
    Ariel Levin

  92. Looking forward to watching the video

  93. I’m in the sowing part of my business, and would like more videos on that please :)

  94. Great Video Gideon,

That’s actually what I recently have been doing,

Recently I actually have been nurturing several recent Blogposts, in an attempt to make my Posts look like ‘Attractive Flowers’. What I mean to say is that recently I had a look at several recent Posts, have put up links with ‘Other Related Posts’, encouragements to participate in discussions and to leave comments, and especially for the longer posts I also created compelling Sub-headings to (hopefully) make them more attractive
for my readers to actually read.

    So talking about Readers…….,
this is where YOU Reader Comes In….., : )

Although I do already recently noticed some actual Comments on several of my Blogs, I would like to see a lot more readers Feedback. (and it goes without saying that I also don’t mind when you give me little gentle pushes and reasons to proceed towards ‘Phase 4′)

What Phase 4, for what this ‘Resting Phase’ is concerned, today (on my Writing Lifestyle Blog) I actually did a little ‘Polishing’ (placing new Sub-headings etc. etc.) on a Post about taking Breaks (Coffee Breaks) for having a Rest once in a while. It actually gave me the idea to put up Coffee Makers and Espresso Machines on this Blog.

    All the Best,
To your Happy – Online Marketing – Inspiration,
    HP

Good points that you are making… Only we as business people get to wrapped up in the business and are afraid to take the time off because the business might fail…So we keep pushing forward and end up working harder and trying to do everything ourselves… But I know and I think a lot of the people that follow you on your blog will agree… Sometimes it great to let go…
    Thanks for input…
I do have a question… I ran across this on turning articles into Video’s,you know the quick and easy way… Can I get your feedback on this product please… Here is the URL to the product

      Hey Reg

Just had a quick look at that product…

Basically, it’s not something I would recommend, since that misses the point of using a site like YouTube. It’s not called a SOCIAL media site for nothing. You need to get involved as if YouTube is a living organism, and actually interact with it and build a real living relationship with it (or at least the real people on it :) )

  96. Thanks for the great tips Gideon. I’ll definitely being putting these into practice for sure. Christmas time is a great to start clearing the clutter and getting rid of all those distractions and get ready for an exciting year ahead and I can already tell it’s going to be the best year yet!

  97. Hey Gideon:

Please tell me when are you going to open your Rapid Video Blogging Course again… I’ve been writing to your site, but nobody has answered me that

Hey Santiago – I am planning on releasing a few things soon…

      Watch this space…

  98. I say this too… that my work is more like play because I love it so much. Yet, even so, everyday there is much to do and I do get tired. If I’m not careful I will burn out. Even passionate energy is tiring, you know?

Even knowing this, Its really easy for me to skip the rest stage. Kudos to you for resting. And, thank you for reminding me to do the same.

    Thanks for the video.

Verstaan jy nog Afrikaans, al praat jy met n Aussie aksent.!!!!!!!

  100. [..YouTube..] Hey Gideon
Love the balance aspect. We talk much about this in our seminars for health care practitioners. As a practitioner we tell everyone else to do it but forget to do the same.
The rest to me also enables you to gain a new perspective and like you say ‘cut away the loose ends’

  102. As a generality I like it. Thanks for clearing up the smoke.
I have a quick question. Will you please include some tips for consultants? There is a lot of advisors for a business-product, and very little for business-services. Thank you very much

Great video – I have enjoyed watching this video. I have been working “Smarter” for the last three years and I am not yet at the “rest stage” but I can see it within my reach. I am at the third stage and almost at the fourth stage!! Love how the journey has been for the last three years and what I have learnt. Great video Gideon :)

Gideon, it sounds like your situation and mine are much alike, and that we are on very similar timelines. I’m a bit behind you where my production skills are concerned, but seeing one of your videos gave me a simple suggestion that got me moving again on completing my studio remodel. Like you, my garage is my studio, and its former life as a home utility workshop has presented many challenges. Happy to say that finding your page on YouTube has been a blessing, and will continue to be. Cheers!

I recommend that everyone try ProperIncomeDOTnet. I worked an hour my first day and made $75. My second day I made $150. I can’t wait to see where this takes me!!
