I have another very helpful cool tip for all you guys who want to know how to easily record your iPad screen to a computer screen. If you are someone like me, who loves recording educational videos; or if you have been loving the use of a writing tablet for illustrations – this new app is way cooler!
Inside this video, I mention how you can switch from your iPad screen to whatever you’re recording and the two ways of setting this thing up (basic and advanced). I also briefly show how to make this app work on your computer.
I am loving how this app has made my life easier and my productivity a lot better. I don’t have to think of preparing slides, I can basically be very visual in real time while I just flick between my illustrations on my iPad and what I am recording on the camera.
There are a number of other applications that you can use this for and I am sure you are going to love it! Let me know what you think of this app by leaving your comment below.
Hello! I’ve got the coolest, newest thing to share with you. It’s a way of sharing your iPad screen on any computer. Interested? Keep watching.
Hi there! Gideon Shalwick here. In today’s video, I’m going to share with you something that I’ve been looking forward for quite a while. And that is how to share the screen of your iPad on any computer screen of your choice.
That has a number of really, really cool applications; if you’re wondering what the heck am I talking about, why would you want to do that. Well first off, when you’re doing educational type of videos, this one for example, you want to be able to switch between what you’re doing on your iPad screen and whatever else, whatever you’re recording. That’s very useful for people like me who are recording videos like this.
It’s also useful if you just want to use it like a Bamboo writing tablet. You can use this like a writing tablet for your computer. Not quite, but you’ll see what I mean soon.
This is really really great. Now, I’ve got a couple of sources to credit for this. The first one is Mashable; on one of their videos, they talked about this little sort of thing. The Bamboo Stylus that you can use for drawing on your iPad. I know it’s been around for ages, but I’ve just got one myself. It’s really really cool. It has taken my iPad to a whole new level.
And the other person I want to credit is Ed Dale for showing the application that you need to use for sharing your iPad screen with any other computer screen of your choice.
How does this work? Let’s have a look.
The basic setup is if you just want to share the screen of your iPad on a computer screen. So I’ve got another computer here. In fact, there’s another computer sitting right there. I can see the same screen that I have on my iPad on my screen over there that I’m recording, by the way.
But if you just want to have a really simple setup, this is what is going to look like.
You are going to have your iPad over here… Actually, let’s get to see how this works in real life. I’m going to use a red pen here. So I’m going to circle this. This is your iPad, of course. Just so that you can see.
You’re running a special app on here. Basically that sends the screen images to your computer screen over here, which is very very cool. This all happens in real time, It’s pretty much instant. You can go full screen on your computer to make it look pretty good. There are some issues with the aspect ratio because the aspect ratio of your iPad is probably not going to be the same as the screen aspect ratio of your computer screen. The other thing that I also use and recommend is recording with Screenflow and Camtasia.
The app that you need for this is actually not something that you install on your iPad. It’s something that you need to install on the computer where you want to share the screen of your computer.
The app that you need for that is called Reflection. I think it’s called Reflection, or something like that. I’ll link to it below this video. So you just click on it and go and get it. I think it’s something like 5 or 10 bucks. How ever much it is, it’s totally worth it because it allows you to share your screen like this which is very very useful.
Say, you want to do what I’m doing in this video, for example. You want to flick between what you have on your iPad screen and what you’re recording on your camera. For that you’ll need a setup like this — an Advanced Setup.
That’s me, sitting at the desk with my little iPad over there. Of course, that is now sending the signals out to my computer where it’s getting recorded, the screen is getting recorded there with either Screenflow or Camtasia, if you’re on PC.
Of course, here’s my camera, recording me. What happens is this is not a real time thing where I switch between the screen on my iPad and the screen of my computer, or the screen that you’re seeing through the camera. I do this afterwards in Screenflow, then I just flick between whatever gets recorded and what gets recorded on my computer screen right now. Well it will be, later on when you watch it. Let’s not going to get into that rabbit hole. In any case, that is the sort of setup that you need to be able to do that.
I’m sure you can think of a ton of other really cool applications for this. I have just found this really really good for educational purposes and for illustration purposes. As you can see, I can be very visual here with my communication and it’s super quick for me to prepare now. I don’t even need to think about creating Keynote slides presentations and stuff. I can just flick between what I have drawn on my iPad and what I’m recording on the camera.
Tell me, how would you like to use this? Do you have sort of other applications in mind? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Leave your comment below. Make sure you subscribe as well if you’ve enjoyed watching this video.
Thank you so much for watching. I look forward to seeing you inside my next video.
[..YouTube..] cool video. It is a lit bit advance i think. I think you can just use screenflow with recording camera from your mac with bamboo tablet. Video is not going to be that clean because camera is not that great on computer but it will kinda do the same thing… u can see some of my videos where i do how tos i just use my mac camera… it looks ok.
[..YouTube..] Looks like it is only available for MACs not PCs?
[..YouTube..] hehehe… good one!
[..YouTube..] Ah nice tips to keep things affordable…
[..YouTube..] Ah cool! You know, it actually beats me why we dont have a “Screenflow App” on the ipad yet… perhaps they are working on it!
[..YouTube..] Oh darn… my apologies I should have checked that. I get so carried away with apple products sometimes that I completely forget about the PC world!
[..YouTube..] Yeah looks like it, unfortch!
[..YouTube..] Yeah it makes a lot of sense to have Mac and Apple products when you do video online
lol – thanks! I think my receding hairline might have something to do with growing brains perhaps? hehehe
Yeah totally – the bamboo stylus with it’s paper app, and now this reflection app has taken my iPad to a WHOLE new level. In fact, I stopped using my iPad for months, until I got these cool new tools on it!
Yeah totally! And while you can just use a simple bamboo tablet for that too, I find it sometimes hard to draw on the tablet while looking on the screen, whereas with the Ipad, you can look at the iPad while drawing, and it will come up nicely on the screen, in real time! Much easier to create accurate drawings…
Check one of my previous vids – it shows you how I do the white background. In fact, just google “how to make your videos look more professional” and my video should come up first or second…
Google “how to make your videos look more professional” and my video of showing you how to create a nice clean white background should come up first or second…
correct! but of course I am a little insane about productivity and cool gadgets lol!
Yeah, sorry about that – I forgot to check!
Thanks Gideon! Btw, if you only wanted to record what is on the iPad screen, the ReflectionApp now (April 2012) provides an option to do that WITHOUT having to rely on Camtasia or Screenflow. (Just go to the MENU: Device – Start Recording.)
Yeah, the iPad is more ideal, plus anything apple is just cool like that (I’m not biased)!
No problem, thanks for taking the time to respond.
Hey Gideon! Can you please do a video on when you should upload videos on a day-to-day basis? It’s something which I have been thinking about for the last weeks. I ended up using the demographics section of YouTube Analytics and figuring out which time zone people were in and then using the “prime time” concept to figure out when. But maybe you know of a better way of going about this. Please let me know. As always, great content.
What drawing app are you using on your iPad?
You really need to learn the prices of things it’s 14.99 not 5.00 too pricey. You really need to do your research before you post a video. Where are you getting your info from?
I also use ScreenRecord SD it’s free.
It’s not for pc
Hi Gideon, What is your favourite drawing App on your iPad?
Hey Dale – I use Bamboo Paper – kicks ass!
Hey Dale – I use Bamboo Paper – kicks ass!

No probs! You’re totally welcome!
i love your videos! thanks for actually really sharing too for example sharing what your camera was you use! Some people try to keep all the good tips to themselves! I am going to use this app to record myself showing demo applications for small businesses! I think I am going to play with illustration as well and make it all into a quick mashup video!

best to give it a shot and see what happens!
OK I’m hooked. Better get an ipad now as this looks so cool. Thanks for sharing something so practical again Gideon. By the way….you have real creative flair. Have you missed your calling as an artist?
LOL – the initial expense seems greater before the purchase than after the purchase
Gideon, as always, great idea,
thanks
i got a bit lost how do you record the screen? i need it in writing someone reply
Anyone got the app for PC yet? Thanks in advance
watch crazy dog loves her food
Gideon,
If you think this is cool, have a look at Splashtop’s ‘Whiteboard’ app. This lets you connect the iPad to the computer and then do things like annotate over slideshows, or even control your computer.
Check it out http://www.splashtop.com/whiteboard
Cheers,
Dean Jones
Ah very cool – I’ve been looking for that one! Thanks Dean!
i bought the app but cannot get it working with my macbook pro …. how do you get it working?
Im annoyed. I cant figure it out, either.
I’ve been trying the past hour, and I THINK you need something to use airplay. Once that is on your Mac, it should appear on your IOS device?
I hope this isnt the case, because it clearly says in the description that you dont ned to spend money on expensive gear.
You need a device that uses AIRPLAY to run this. Not once do you mention this in your video, and you EVEN say you don’t need to buy any expensive hardware to run it.
Its been noted on tech forums how much of a joke this video is. Thumbs down heading your way.
Thanks for A) Wasting peoples time and B) WASTING PEOPLES MONEY!!
reflection peeps sent me this instruction. “Download Reflection & copy it 2 your Applications folder. Launch the app, double-tap the home button on yr iPhone 4S, iPad 2, iPad 3 & swipe right on the multitask tray til u c the AirPlay icon next 2 the volume slider. Tap this & select your Mac from the list. Last, toggle the “Mirror” switch. its not quite as what they say so have a play and know it works, u will get there …. i have suggested they do a screen capture tutorial 2 show how 2 set it up
How do you get screen flow on iPad
Really? 5-10 bucks? -_-
Or buy apple tv to put on tv
I read the note in the video that said that this app is not for PC but this is what is says on their front page:
“1.0.1Release Notes
Your iPhone or iPad. On your Mac or PC.
AirPlay mirror your iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or the new iPad to any Mac or PC, wirelessly.
9.3 MB – Free Download is a limited time trial. Reflection requires OS X 10.6.8+ or Windows XP and greater and iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or the new iPad. Recording options are not available on all operating systems”
Hey guys! If you press the home and off button, it will take a picture of your screen!
Where you need it?
If you want to record your screen use quicktime its in your mac already!
If you press the home and off switch on the iPad it takes a photo.
Can’t you just record on your iPad anyway? That’s what I do?
