How To Make Your Videos Look Awesome With Dolly B-Rolls

I am a fan of technology advancement. I love how it makes life a lot easier, both for the seasoned and the newbies; and how it allows people to push their boundaries of creativity and expression without too much fuss.

The iStabilizer Dolly is just that – a cool technology that every video blogger should have in their arsenal. This dolly is the best buy for anyone who wants videos with smooth and stable revolving shots, or B-rolls. Its adjustable rollerblade wheels and flexible Smartphone holder provide just what you need to pick an angle and capture impressive rolling and panning shots.

Watch my video to see some of these shots that I am talking about; and how you too can easily make stunning and amazing B-rolls for your videos.

Nice dolly – I’m into aerial in Darwin, so will look at taking this on our overseas equipment. Your videos have given me some inspirational ideas for our videos…nothing for sale but just to bring the world to the masses. Cheers mate …come on up to Darwin

  8. Maria Slaby

Very cool~ would have loved to see a B Roll of you shooting this video of yourself. Would help me wrap my head around how these pieces all work together. Thanks for the tips otherwise!

    Great video Gideon !
Just wondering how you shortened your Amazon links ?
    Thanks

  13. Graham Rogers

Thanks Gideon great stuff. Love the scenery; sunny Australia. I think I’m going to start doing this too now its summer here in the UK. What microphone are you using on your iPhone?

  14. WildForrestMonkeyBoy

Gideon, you seem to be implying that this video was primarily shot with the iStabilizer you are showing, yet other than the very occasional dolly shot this video was clearly shot with the camera at eye height. That dolly is only a few inches high.

On a side note, what you’re describing is a dolly shot, which has nothing to do with being a B roll. B roll is, straight from Wikipedia “supplemental or alternate footage intercut with the main shot in an interview or documentary”.

  15. WildForrestMonkeyBoy

The dolly shots do look nice though, especially considering the lack of suspension or even inflatable tires. Gotta love Surfers and that golden hour lighting.

  16. Stan Gore

digitaljuice makes a much sturdier version, with a proper tripod screw mount for your camera.

  17. Tim Jeter

If you search for a product in the Associates area (via product name, number, etc.), the results will give you a little ‘Get Link’ button. The down arrow there reveals the options to use Amazon’s shortening tool.

  18. Tim Jeter

Question for you, since you have more video experience than me: what causes the ‘stuttering’ of the shot – primarily things in the foreground – when panning? I know it’s something to do with the speed of the pan vs. the frame rate, but at 1:36 and especially 5:21 there’s it’s simply not a smooth pan. Does it get lost in translation (re-encoding/processing), or does it show like this in your original? I’m watching in HD.

    Cheers.

  19. Jeff Bernstein

Gideon, you are framed perfectly in your walking and talking video. What camera are you using on your Iphone? It doesn’t look like you are guessing on the centering of your image?

    Thanks, Jeff

  20. Daniel Piraino

    Thanks my brother !! :)

  21. Edmund Pelgen

Hey Gideon, those B-rolls look awesome. I think I found the big brother to the istabilizer. Have a look for Cinetics. I think it was a kickstarter project and they have some pretty heavy duty kit but they also have a small unit called Miniskates for iphones. Love the vids.

  22. Peter Demes

    Danke für den Tipp!

  23. wemakepies

What camera and mount are you using for your walking shots?

  24. wemakepies

Okay you just answered my question. Maybe I should watch the whole video before commenting next time.

  25. amwwnet

Hi Gideon, thanks for the great information. Which camera on your iPhone 5 are you using? Also how do you keep yourself so centered in the video, is there a guide on the Monopod? Thanks.

  26. citycasttv

Snap — I’m really interested in this too! At first I thought Gideon was using a camera mounted on some kind of pole strapped to his chest — I didn’t realise he was holding it with one hand. It’s amazingly smooth.

  27. RossomeMarketing

Really cool. Wish it could go a little higher, though. Still, an inexpensive dolly is excellent for b-roll! Thanks for sharing, Gideon!

  28. Shane Carr

    Thanks for the info. Gideon.

  29. Kym Turner

Hi Gideon..great info, but unfortunately 2 out of the 3 items you recommend are not available to be sent to Australia from Amazon..Don’t know why??

  30. systemcrash1969

Really cool product and not that expensive too. I must say thought that I’m a bit fed up of that invasive “i” prefix everywhere. I think it’s time to move on and be more original about brand-names. But that doesn’t take off any of it’s quality thought.

Great video!! We love seeing our products in use. Thanks for posting this!

  33. Noah Rasheta

P.S. – We’re working on fixing that little rubber tab so that on future versions it won’t come off.

  34. Gideon Shalwick

    You’re very welcome!

  35. Gideon Shalwick

Ah that is awesome to hear!

  36. Gideon Shalwick

    Indeed Mark! hehe

  37. Gideon Shalwick

    Thanks Lisa!

  38. Gideon Shalwick

Darwin? Looks a little hot over there for me hehe! Glad my vids could be of service! And glad you’re showing Australia to the world! Goon on ya mate!

  39. Gideon Shalwick

Uhm… I meant GOOD on ya… not goon lol

  40. Gideon Shalwick

Ah yeah – good point Maria – I thought about that too as I was watching it back, but at that stage it was too late. Next time ;)

  41. Gideon Shalwick

Uhm… almost! Try again? You’re very close… kinda!

  42. Gideon Shalwick

Uhm… this looks like spam sorry. Maybe try a useful comment next time?

  43. Gideon Shalwick

    Nope… getting close though!

  44. Gideon Shalwick

Yup that’s it – thanks for helping out Tim!

  45. Gideon Shalwick

    Cheers Daniel!

  46. Gideon Shalwick

You have summer in the UK Graham? hehe just kidding. For the mic I’m using, please check my earlier video on yt at: /watch?v=jsUxzR63Noo

  47. Gideon Shalwick

Hi WildForrestMonkeyBoy (cool yt handle by the way!) – yeah I probably could have done a better job at explaining it all. Thanks for the feedback. The idea is that you use the dolly to create extra b-roll footage that you can use inside your videos. Perhaps I’ll create another video some time to explain myself a little better!

  48. Gideon Shalwick

Yeah – I am a total noob with dollys… the surfaces I used were pretty rough, so I think it would be pretty easy to get MUCH better results than I did with just a bit of practice.

  49. Gideon Shalwick

Ok cool – thanks for the heads up about that Stan. Always nice to have alternatives!

  50. Gideon Shalwick

Ok – we’ve figured this out now. I recorded the video on my iphone5 which has a frame rate of 30 – and the editing program we used exported at a slightly different frame rate… which may have caused the stutter. So… next time, we’ll make sure we export at the same frame rate as what the camera records in.

  51. Gideon Shalwick

Hey Jeff – yeah I used the self facing camera (Facetime HD camera – 720p) on my iPhone5. So, I could see myself on the screen as I was walking along with the iStabilizer monopod.

  52. Gideon Shalwick

Ahh very COOOL! I remember seeing it on kickstarter yeah – and I was very impressed back then! Great to see they’ve taken it to the next level! Just saw your splasheos too – meets your approval?

  53. Gideon Shalwick

Sie sind herzlich eingeladen, mein Freund!

  54. Gideon Shalwick

I explain it all in one of my previous vids here: /watch?v=jsUxzR63Noo

  55. Gideon Shalwick

Hehe no worries – glad you found the answer!

  56. Gideon Shalwick

Hey guys – I used the self facing camera (Facetime HD camera – 720p) on my iPhone5. So, I could see myself on the screen as I was walking along with the iStabilizer monopod. It’s so easy to use and as you can see, even a clumsy person like me can use it!

  57. Gideon Shalwick

You can also take a little platform with you to get greater height right?

  58. Gideon Shalwick

You’re welcome Shane! Let me know about any other videos you’d like me to create!

  59. Gideon Shalwick

Hmmm – that’s such a pain! I feel your pain! Have you tried searching for it on ebay? Or ordering direct from the iStabilizer site? Another option is to get a USA mailbox (I use usamail1), and then get it sent to Oz from that mailbox. Costs a little extra though, but it works.

  60. Gideon Shalwick

hehe – yeah it seems like everyone and their idogs are using the “I” as a prefix for the brands. What shall the next prefix be? Or maybe a postfix? Ideas?

  61. bobinozdotcom

    Alexander Headlands?

  62. Kim McCarthy

    I think I’m seasick.

  63. Gideon Shalwick

hehe – sorry about that Kim!

  66. Hello Gideon, I am your fan here from Brazil and I love your videos. I wonder how you made this video, as made super stabilized image. Would you like to make videos like this. I have a GoPro Hero3, will be giving to do this? Thanks for help us!

  67. Paul Blackmore

Why don’t they use soft rubber wheels? Those skateboard wheels bounce over the smallest of stones and create a jerky video. Softer wheels will help absorb those shocks somewhat.

  68. Armin Ferrari

    Gold Coast

  69. Seb Lesec

I was thinking the same thing. I assume it has to be used on a very flat surface only with no little bumps or anything in the way?

  70. ItsThatPhotoGuy

Here is a cool tip! use foamboard for even smoother surface :)

  71. Free Insanity Workout Videos

are you using the Istabilizer monopod to shoot yourself on this video??? and if so what are you shooting with?

  72. Joel Phua

What is the microphone that you use for this video?

  73. bookingselect

    Dear,
    You re site sounds infected…
