Hi there… Welcome back!
How did you get on with the last lesson? Were you able to sort out your Hedgehog Concept clearly? If you didn’t, don’t worry about it; it can take sometime.
What I suggest you do is to keep on going back to that lesson and to keep on reassessing your Hedgehog Concept and the areas that you want to be operating in.
Remember, you can look at Educating, Entertaining, Reporting or Socializing on YouTube. Those are the kind of videos that you can create. And see how they can fit in with your Hedgehog Concept. Don’t worry if you haven’t got it fully figured out yet. Just go back there and go over that lesson again and realize that it’s a continual process.
You might think that my Hedgehog Concept is fully complete and perfect… Well, it’s not. It’s something that is on going and you will find it as you keep going. As you go, you hone it further and further and become clearer on your Hedgehog Concept. Mine is pretty clear but I’m sure I can make it even clearer. Just keep that in mind.
So what’s inside this video?
This video is all about helping you create videos super fast at a budget that won’t break the bank. That’s really what it is about. Obviously there are many different options around.
This is one of the most confusing areas for people on the internet: to find out what sort of equipment they need to be able to create remarkable videos online that doesn’t break the bank and also doesn’t break your head with all the technical stuff. I’m going to share with you a really cool solution that I’m sure you are going to love.
Before I share that with you — What’s the big deal about creating videos fast? Isn’t it just better to take your time and create videos slowly? Why is it important to have videos fast on the internet? Why is it important to have them created fast?
If you look at the internet today and the whole economy as it is today, it’s not the big companies that win the race anymore. Well, perhaps in some cases; but more and more it’s the fast. If you can implement your ideas faster than the bigger companies then you can win. So it’s all about speed of implementation.
With my method, the Rapid Video Creation Method you can create these videos very very fast at high enough quality and get the word out there about your business on whatever you’re doing online.
The other thing about creating videos fast is that the more you can increase the cycle rate of production, the more videos you are going to create over the same period of time as someone who’s got a cycle rate of creation slower than yours.
For example, if you can only create one video per week, that means you got about 52 videos every year. Compare that to someone else who creates two videos every week. So their cycle time is twice as fast as yours then. They can have 104 videos every year. What about if you can have three videos every week? See what I’m saying?
The faster you can create these videos the more videos you’re going to get out there over the same period of time. It’s very important. Of course if you have more videos, it’s going to give you more exposure; that’s just how it works.
YouTube, the way that it’s set up when you create your channel, it’s like a new website. The more pages or the more videos you have on that channel, the more YouTube and Google are going to like you, the more they are going to serve your videos on their search engines and the more exposure you’re going to get.
That’s just how it happens. Over time you start ranking better and better especially if you create really amazing content. I will talk about that in other lesson because it’s such an important concept to create really valuable content.
Of course with more exposure you have more domination. That’s what it’s about.
A lot of people freak out when they think about video on the internet. The reason they freak out is because they compare it to Hollywood productions. What I’d like to say is that: “Have a sigh of relief; just chill. You don’t have to have Hollywood production type of videos!”
You’d need to have a certain threshold of professionalism for your videos though, but certainly you don’t need Hollywood type of production gear and editors to make your videos look great.
Inside this video I will share to you some of the tools that you can use to make your videos look professional enough. It just needs to be good enough to be able to reach that professional threshold so that people can see that you mean business online. Keep that in mind… You don’t need to spend an arm and a leg on your production costs to make your videos good enough.
Alright, so let’s get into some of the equipment that you will need.
You’ll need a camera; you’ll need a good microphone; you’ll need some good lighting. And perhaps a nice studio, depending on how your videos are set up.
1. CAMERA
As I said before this is one of the most confusing things on the internet for people who want to get into online video marketing. Which camera? What camera? How much should you spend? What sort of specs should you have?
I’m going to make it easy for you. The best camera that I’ve been able to find so far is the Kodak Zi8 or similar cameras. There are other cameras that do very similar things, like the Flip. The Flip sounds like it’s going out of business by the time of this recording but you might still be able to pick a few up.
The Kodak Zi8 is a great camera because it records in HD format. The files are not that big so you can easily manage them. And very importantly, it’s got a microphone jack so you can plug in an external microphone — like this one here — into the camera and get much better sound quality.
I actually use something that is slightly different. I use a Canon 60D. It’s the camera that I’m recording with right now. It’s a little bit more expensive than the Kodak. It’s a lot more advanced and a lot more difficult to use but it does a great job.
In fact, what I’ve done to help you cut through all this confusion is, if you want some more information, I’ve created “The Ultimate Guide To Camera Selection”. I’ll include a link to that Report right below this video. There’s no optin required. It’s just a free thing I want to give away because so many people ask me.
Have a look at that and it will give you bit more of an idea of what kind of camera you’ll need for your specific situation. But in most cases, for the Rapid Video Blogging type of thing, I recommend the Kodak Zi8. It’s a marvelous little camera!
2. MICROPHONE
What about sound? You need a really good sound.
Often you’ll see videos on YouTube that have pretty good image quality but the sound is really bad! That totally detracts from the whole video. So you want to make sure that your sound is good. The better your sound and the better your lighting is the less high quality camera you’ll need; that’s how it works.
Let’s look at some options here…
There’s a really great little microphone that I learned from my friend which is called the Sony ECM AW3. It’s a very affordable little microphone that works well with the Kodak Zi8. I haven’t tested this microphone myself yet but it’s affordable enough to check out.
A friend of mine, Dave, recommended this to me and he said it works just work brilliantly with the Kodak Zi8. They are a video marketing specialist as well.
The microphone that I’m using for my camera which you could also use for the Kodak, is a lot more expensive – it’s about $700. The previous that I’ve just mentioned is, I think, about $150 to $200. It’s a lot more affordable.
This one here that I’m using; it’s a wireless Sony UWP-V1 microphone. It’s about $700.
The next type of microphone that you can use is something like the Audio-Technica. This is a much more affordable type of microphone. Obviously it’s not as good, but it’s only like $30 or something like that. You can plug it in to your Kodak or another camera that’s got a microphone jack and it works pretty well.
In fact that’s the microphone that I used at the beginning; and it did a marvelous job for me for most of the time. It does have a cord, it’s about a four meter long cord; but if you’re just in a house or in your home studio, it doesn’t really matter.
I’ve got links for all of these resources, by the way, below this video. If you want to check them out just click on those links. Some of them maybe are affiliate links – just be aware of that. But you’re welcome to just buy through your own links as well. But I’ll put the links down below the video for your reference.
3. LIGHTS
What about lights? Lights are just as important as the sound. When you have good lighting then your video quality will be a lot better as well.
If you’re just on a strict budget, you can just use your normal household lamps. Just make sure you don’t over expose your skin. Maybe you can put a cloth or something in front of the lights or a thin sheet of paper. Be very careful that you don’t create a fire hazard with that sort of setup. You just want to make sure that whatever you’re recording is well lit up.
The next level up from that are some construction lights that you can get from your local hardware store. I think you can pay something $30, $40 or $50 and you can get some pretty good lights, these halogen lights. They do a pretty good job. The only issue with them is that they get hot and they also create a bit of a yellow kind of light.
The next kind of light is what I’m using here; it’s more professional. These lights are quite a bit more expensive. They are about $400 each. I’ve got four lights — one there, one there and two behind me to light up the back wall.
If you want to go to the next level, that is something that I could recommend. Here is a link to some that are similar to mine: These ones.
4. SOFTWARE
What about the software? You’ll also need some software.
If you’re on Mac, which by the way is a really really good platform for video, I recommend using Screenflow for all your videos. In fact, I use that now for all my videos that I edit myself. I use Screenflow for both capturing the screen and also this kind of videos that you are watching now for doing the editing.
I do have a professional Editor now, by the way, just so that you know. I’ve taken things up to the next notch. But in my first three years of doing video I did most of the editing all by myself.
If you’re on PC, I recommend software called Sony Movie Studio HD. Wonderful piece of software; it’s $40 or something like that. Really worth it. You can create some really lovely quality videos on that as well.
5. STUDIO
Let’s talk about your studio. This is often a bone of contention especially if you are trying to setup something at home and there’s a family that’s noisy. That’s always an issue, trust me.
But let’s keep in mind that you don’t always have to record inside your studio. There’s of course the outside as well, where you can record very easily. Just be careful with the surroundings that you choose.
Let’s talk about the inside. Say you want to setup a studio inside.
What I recommend is either a bedroom or perhaps your garage. It will be important to kind of soundproof the room or create it in such a way that you don’t have too much noise coming in from the outside. Also, make sure that your sound from your voice is getting absorbed by enough soft materials inside that room.
A really affordable way of doing this is to put a bunch of furniture in the room or soft things like pillows and blankets. Make sure you’ve got a carpet on the floor and that will really go along way.
The thing to watch out for if you’re outside is, of course, wind noise or any kind of noise or interruptions. Be careful when you record outside that the microphone that you’re using is not in an area where there is a lot of wind.
When you get wind on a microphone it becomes very noisy. So either then you have to have a really good microphone with a sock on it, or something like that – a windsock – that will reduce the noise from the wind. Or just select a spot that is not in the wind.
Also make sure there’s no distractions. If there are going to be school kids running around and interrupting your recording, pick another spot. It’s really as simple as that.
I want to show you my example of my studio. I’m currently recording this in a bedroom but I’ve also set a studio up in our garage. So one half of the garage; the other half has the car and the other half is the studio. In fact, I will list the video below somewhere on this page so that you can watch that.
That’s how I make an exact setup like this, except it’s in a garage. Go ahead and watch that video after you’ve watch this video.
Think about your studio; it doesn’t have to be a hundred percent pro. Seriously, once you see the sort of stuff that I use, you’ll be quite surprised how simple and straightforward it is.
SUMMARY
Let’s quickly summarize what we’ve talked about inside this video.
The main emphasis here is that you need to learn how to create videos fast. We’ve talked about increasing that cycle time of creating your videos so that you can have more content over a certain period of time and so that you can get more exposure and, in the end, rank better in Google and YouTube and get more traffic, get more leads and make more sales. That’s the bottom of it.
The other thing we’ve talked about is the equipment that you need. Once again, you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get started with this. You can get away with some very affordable equipment that still provides a really good result.
In fact for a very long time, I simply used the Flip camera to record all my videos with and the result was great. A lot of people get really amazing results from the Kodak Zi8; it’s a pretty affordable camera.
Don’t worry though… If you want to get something more advanced like for example the 60D camera that I’m using for this recording, have a read of my “Guideline For Selecting Your Camera” below this video somewhere. You’ll get the download for that and that will help you select the right camera.
Then setup your studio…
Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to record your video! You’ve got the equipment. You’ve figured out your Hedgehog Concept — the area that you want to operate in. Now you’re ready to start recording your own videos!
Next one I’d like you to do is to print out the workbook that’s for this lesson. It’s below this video somewhere as well. There’s a lot of resources for this one. Print it out, and go through the exercises and also print out the Video Camera Selection Guide because that will give you a bit more information on camera selection.
Inside the workbook you will be able to make a budget for the equipment that you’ll want to invest in — your camera, your lights, your microphone. Make a budget so that you can be clear on how much money you want to spend on this.
Go ahead and get your equipment if you don’t have it already and then start to create your own first video!
Before I close, I just want to say something that I think is really valuable. If you already have the equipment, just use that. Just use whatever you have already to get started with. You don’t need to necessarily invest in more equipment.
Just start with what you’ve got and then as you go, you can upgrade or change your equipment. Trust me, technology is just getting better and better and more and more affordable. It’s a very exciting industry to be in.
Inside the next video, what I’m going to teach you is “How To Setup Your Video Domination Hub”. This is the thing that’s going to help you capture all those views and traffic on YouTube into your own asset that you own yourself. This is where it becomes very exciting where you can start leveraging it and start making money from it.
Until next time, I look forward to seeing you inside the next video…
Once again I got the email from you just after I have publish a new video.
It’s not very professional looking (mine) I did it just for fun.
I don’t have much equipments.Need to buy soon.
I hope to improve my videos using your tips.
Thank you very much for sharing very valuable tips for free.
If you have some free time please give me some advice.
my recent Guitar Video
I didn’t watch the video in full but the background and the music is great, but how about a few words from you – an introduction, one where viewers can see your face. Also why make yourself appear suddenly on top of the background?!
Hey Sinhala
Yeah I agree with Ian – it would be good to see your face and to hear a few words from you – that will help you connect better with your audience.
Gideon
Thanks for the tips both Ian and Gideon.I will buy a good voice mic and try that.I will let you know the results,Thank you very much

Hi Gideon,
Thank you so much for sharing those tips.
I really thought you were using the Green screen technology.
I’m really surprised . Your video really look great, clean and professional.
I will start sooner than I thought!!! just have to find more information about editing, to have the kind of effect you have with your text and pictures.
If I want to begin this week, is there any free software (for PC) that could do the job before investing in Sony vegas studio?
Thank you again,
your french fan 😉
Lili N.
Hey Lili
You can just use Windows Movie Maker for a start – it’s free on PC.
However, it’s a bit frustrating to use as soon as you want to add more fancy things like extra audio or video tracks.
But for just the basics, it can work well.
Gideon

I am a little confused. I know you can edit video created in ScreenFlow in ScreenFlow. Did I correctly understand you to say you can also edit video created in the other cameras (such as the Kodak Zi8) in ScreenFlow?
Correct!

Gideon, Great tutorials! I appreciate the time and effort you put into these. I’m soaking it up
Don’t really care for the stark white background, Gideon – especially against a white page. It would be okay for a very short video, but for prolonged viewing the contrast within the video is inherently somewhat harsh, and I do find myself wanting some separation of visual elements between the video and the page itself (visual separation being an important element in design) – i.e., a border or color differentiation. IMHO, a very pale pastel would be easier on the eyes, although a shadow or other form of frame would be a partial compromise..
Hey Gideon–
great tutorial, and glad to know you can do this with just a white screen (without a greenscreen)!
how do you use screenflow to create the text and images that appear alongside you? Do you create them as a slideshow in keynote? Then how do you get the text and images to stand out by themselves, without looking like a “slide” inside a frame? It would be really helpful to learn how to do that!
thanks a bunch,
Rik
Wow! I REALLY enjoyed these videos— THANK YOU! I really liked how you broke down your studio as well. That was so helpful =)
I also was very curious what you used to or how you went about creating those great affects where products would ‘pop’ in and out while you’re speaking. Like when the Mac computer showed up, then the screenflow software showed up within the Mac screen, then the screenflow software pops out of the mac screen! That was soooo cool!! Is that hard to to?
Again, thank so much for providing these!!
Lance
Hi,
We’re also using the Kodak Zi8 camera for simpler shots, it’s a great camera to start out with.
You can get a FREE one if you invest in Andy Jenkins Video Boss (and keep it).
Fredrik
Not so cool sharing your aff links here Fredrik. I’m frowning…
Gideon-
This brings up a great point and I’m curious about your opinion. I know some bloggers who pull inappropriate comments immediately because of promoting another site, profanity, or abusing others in their community. There are other bloggers who keep both the positive and the negative while even others have all comments approved before posting. What is your position on blog comments and more importantly, why have you come to that conclusion?
Best regards,
-Ron

I LOVE THE Zi8! What a great camera!
The other important piece of equipment … TRIPOD! My hands are just not that steady anymore!
Pat, you might want to pick up a couple of Might D Lights also because the Zi8 isn’t great in low light (my only criticism). They’re about $40 each. LED, so will run off battery or AC (and no heat!). Can be affixed to metal surface (magnetic back), hung from hook or will stand on any flat surface. Not a powerful “pro” light setup of course, but just one or two can give you the extra boost you need sometimes.
Otherwise, I agree that it’s a great camera and I love the external audio jack with wireless lavalier. (I do use a DSLR when I need really high-quality product stills or certain effects, though.)
Is it possible to buy a tripod for this camera?
Jon

Hi Gideon!
This is a great and useful video!
But I have a quick question regarding your course:
While reading the Rapid Video Blogging PDF I found the URL for the course-registration but it said that it is temporarily closed. Is this because the course is already full? Or because the course isn’t online yet? Will there be a future opportunity to get on the course?
Thank you very much and keep up the great work!
Florian
Hey Florian
Yes the course is currently closed to the general public – has been for quite a few months now.
I’ll open up the course again soon some time – just keep your eyes on your email inbox…

Great video Gideon, would you recommend an editor, and if so, what price would you typically pay him/her for the quality of editing in your video?
Hey Rob
It depends on the kind of quality you want, and where you are getting your editor from.
Here are some options:
– Students from a video/film school – anything more than they can earn at the local pizza shop, which is not much
– Professional local editor – can cost an arm and a leg…
– Outsourced professional editor – anywhere from $10/hr to say $30/hr, depending on where you go…

Hi Gideon
Thank you for your valued information I always enjoy your trainnings.
I have downloaded Sony vegas two times now and tried the trail version I really can not understand how it works I have spent hours trying to learn but still confuses me. I have used mircrosoft Studio but it keeps telling me I have not got enough disc space so I can not use it any more. I have Camtasia is that the same as Sony vegas studio. i have to learn everything myself but not a high tech person
Can you help me
Hey Celia
Sounds like you may need my video training course which goes into much more detail about the “how to’s”.
I’m planning on releasing it again soon some time, so just keep watching this space.
In the mean time, is there anyone else who can help you out?
Gideon
Camtasia is a screen capturing program. I want to include screen shots of QuickBooks so viewers can see what QB looks like as I do things, so I need Camtasia for that.
Sony Vegas Pro is for editing video. So you’d use that to integrate video of you speaking with your screen captures from Camtasia.
I have no idea how to learn Sony Vegas Pro. I’m going to have to learn it from scratch too. It’s taken me months to learn enough to answer your questions. It’s very complicated; I know.

Great videos as always Gideon, appreciate the time you have taken to do this.
I totally agree with what you say about just getting started – I put it off for so long and wish I hadn’t.
One thing – I found a tripod the other day for £11.71 on Amazon – I was amazed as had put off getting one as thought it was expensive. Is the hama Star 61 – lightweight and does an excellent job.
Look forward to the next video..
Jennie
Great work Jennie!
I agree – it really is easy once you start taking action!
Just watched some of your vids – you’re great on camera!
Gideon
Thank you so very much Gideon I really appreciate your efforts, information and resources supplied.
Hi Gideon,
Thanks for sharing this valuable info with us. Its really cool. Will try to buy my suitable devices from your affiliate link and will share my experience soon about my own Video experience. Again thanks for everything. Cheers.
Great compilation of information … and in several formats!
I think this is more a matter of personal preference. I find the total whiteness to be refreshing and it doesn’t allow distraction. It has a clean, crisp appearance – but that’s just my opinion. Thx!
Thank you, Gideon!
I agree with the getting started part. I did not do anything for a long time as I did not know how to be perfect. Now I know it’s a growing and ever evolving process.

Hi Gideon,
I have a quick question for you.
I’ve been trying to set up a florescent lighting area for the white background but have gotten a terrible “wavy wobble” effect with gray lines moving up and down the screen. Obviously, this doesn’t work. I have a Kodak zi8 and am using daylight florescent bulbs set up on a vertical plane. When I set them on a horizontal plane I don’t get as many of the gray lines. Do you know any solutions to this problem? Apparently it has something to do with how the zi8 captures the video with its CMOS function. It seems that there should be a solution and you were the person I thought of to ask about it.
Thanks,
Joy
Hey Joy
Any chance you could show me an example of a video with the problem?
It could be due to a number of things, but I want to see the video first before I can give a good answer…

Hey Brian
Great point – I’ve actually been experimenting with exactly what you are describing.
And for me, I am siding with you – it does look better with somewhat of a pale’ish background!
Gideon
Hey Rik
The effects inside my mini course video are all done by my video editor using Adobe After Effects. Those kind of effects can get quite specialized.
However, you can still do some pretty fancy things inside ScreenFlow. For example, the video below was all done using ScreenFlow:
http://gideonshalwick.com/how-to-be-confident-on-camera/
For the effects, I either used just normal text effects inside the editor, or imported some pictures that I drew using my screen and drawing pad.

Great video Gideon. Gobs of great advice. Thank you.
Great video Gideon. Gobs of great advice. Thank you.
Just starting out and am so glad I found your information, it’s truly comprehensive and “followable” (I think I’ve just invented a new word.
Would appreciate your advice to a couple of very quick questions.
Q1. Black backdrop v White backdrop. Any observations?
Q2. Camera choice. If producing head and shoulder only videos and the subject is well illuminated, would using the inbuilt web cam on my newish imac computer produce acceptable results?
Thanks for reading and I look forward, in anticipation to your advice.
Thanks again for your professionalism and superb content.
Sincerely,
Tony.
PS. Where can I get a TV image graphic, similar to the one you use on your video intro?
Hey Tony
Thanks for your great feedback – much appreciated!
Here are some quick answers…
Q1. I think it really comes down to personal preference. Mine is white, but I have used black backgrounds in the past as well. I guess it depends a little on the kind of feel you want for your videos and your site.
Q2. Yes it would – for starters, that may be all you need. But as you progress further, you may want to invest into something more “mobile”. But whatever is easiest for you while still giving you great results. You can either use ScreenFlow or iMovie for recording via your Mac webcam.
Gideon
PS: For my TV image graphic (intro splash screen) I just got my designer to do it for me. But I think you should be able to find someone on http://www.elance.com to do it for you – or even http://www.odesk.com as well!
Love your course. After watching, I realized I didn’t need to spend a fortune on equipment I’d have difficulty figuring out how to use. So I got the Zi8 and the AudioTechnica mic, but am having real difficulty getting good sound. At first the sound was too soft, so I just increased the gain in the camera. Now it sounds buzzy. I’m using iMovie 08 to edit, which helps but is still softer and harsher than I expected.
Any suggestions on how to get better sound from this mic? Do you do post audio fixes? Of course I’m watching your videos again and realizing you are not especially loud either, so maybe I’m trying for something that doesn’t matter? Advice appreciated. Trying to get my first vid up quick!
Hmmm… It sounds like you may have a faulty microphone there Jen!
Can you post your video somewhere so I can see/hear the result?
I have not had anyone else mention any troubles with that microphone, that’s why I think it may be faulty…
Also try recording with just the battery power, and without the mains power for the camera. Often that can create interference, depending on the frequency of your power source and the country that you are in.
Gideon
I think you’re right, because the problem suddenly fixed itself. I kept fiddling around, doing tests, and then blam! The sound was loud. If it stays, then I’ll keep it, otherwise I’ll see if AudioTechnica will exchange. Haven’t been too impressed with their customer service tho.
Now, for file sizes. Yowza! A 9 min video at 720p was over 100MB. I eventually want to shoot a 30 min training video. How do I even move these puppies around? Uploads take forever!
Thanks Gideon,
I’m preparing to start my blog after reading Yaro’s Profit Blog Blueprint…and the report both of you compiled…Road Map to Blogging. This time, am trying to at least get it right to some extent and with time get better. The reason is that I have tried to blog before but I wasn’t well equipped enough with how to doing it then. So, I want to say Thank You!

Hello Gideon,
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with the rest of us. I am making instructional videos about flamenco dancing. That means that I need to light and video tape the whole body, not just head and shoulder shots. Here is my latest video http://youtu.be/4s48JNNirAw
I am using Canon Vixia with a wide angle lens (because my dance studio is too small)
plus three lights (one Fresnel and two ordinary lights)
I will worry about mic and sound later, for now I am using just the mic in my camera
Do you have any advice on how to light my videos better, given the fact that I need to show the whole body.
Many thanks
hi There
it is not for me but i will give my opinion. ; )
i would but a background and get close to you… i think it would avoid any distraction on the background…

Hi Gideon, Great video!
I’ve been shooting and editing live and screen capture video for about a year now. I’ve built up my equipment and the quality of my videos. I’m using Final Cut Express to edit my live video and Camtasia: Mac for the screen captures. My camera is a consumer grade Canon Vixia HD video camera. It captures compressed video that needs converting before editing. FCE does that on logging.
My question: In your lesson here you mentioned using Screen Flow to edit live video. I wasn’t aware this was possible. If so, I’d be tempted to switch over from Camtasia. It’s probably much simpler to use than FCE also. But not sure if it would work with the video camera’s native files.
It’s hard to tell from the Screen Flow website if this is actually possible.
Thanks!

Thank you for these great videos.
One question: Does Screen Flow allow you to edit live video?
Not sure what you mean by “edit live video”?
ScreenFlow is designed to record your screen, and then you can edit that recording, but I also use it for normal “moving picture” videos that I record with my video camera.
Hope that answers your question.
Gideon
Was I mistaken, or weren’t there supposed to be some more videos in this series?
Hi Gideon, i am wondering how did you made those effects in your video? Like words, screens etc… just would like to know the software you used for? and what about your logo at the beginning? thanks a lot.
Gideon doesn’t appear to be responding to questions on this site anymore.
Hey Brian
I do still respond, but it’s just been a little busy lately with the re-opening of Rapid Video Blogging.
Talk soon!
Gideon
Hey Brian
Yeah you were definitely mistaken
There are 7 lessons in total.
If you’re subscribed at http://www.RapidVideoBlogging.com, you should receive all of them eventually.
I think they are spaced out to be delivered over a period of 2-3 weeks.
Gideon
Hey Danillo
My video editor uses After Effects for the cool graphic effects. I won’t be able to tell you how to do those. Whenever I do my own videos, I just use ScreenFlow which also has some funky text animations and transitions – not as cool as After Effects though…
Gideon

So, just passing this along FWIW. ProShow Gold by Photodex. $70. Truly awesome slideshow creations, including all those cool text motion effects we’re starting to see everywhere. The thing that might not be obvious though is that you can use it to create cool intros, outros, etc. and pull them into Sony Vegas, After Effects, etc.with your video. What you do to do this is:
1. Create a little slide show in ProShow for your intro. (You can take stills from your video.), adding your text and effects (“captions” in ProShow lingo).
2. Render under the YouTube option same as your video (e.g., HD 720p) BUT do NOT upload to Youtube.
3. At bottom of screen, select Save to My Computer. As you’ll see, this will be an .avi file.
4. Pull it into your favorite video editor and Bob’s your uncle.
ProShow is so versatile with so many effects, fades, etc. that you will probably find a lot of situations where you will want to shoot stills and create a slideshow video out of them rather than shooting a video from scratch.
NOTE: I have absolutely NO connection to this company or any financial interest in this product.
P.S. Forgot to mention that ProShow handles your background audio or narration too, of course.
Hi guys i just wanna share with you this link to download the sony vegas pro 10 full free to save some money for other important tool like a camera
the link is http://crackedsoftwars.blogspot.com/2011/08/vegas-pro-10-full-with-keygen_7361.html
Wonderful! I took your advice and started off with what I have. I did not had a tripod, and the stores were closed for the holiday season, but I wanted to make videos. I built my own camera stand to hold the camera up.

Another great video. I really like how detailed this video is. Not really trying to critique the video, but from start to end, it is well done. There’s substance in the content of the video; from camera selection, to audio, to software, and how to set up your studio. Very informative. Thanks

This video is great. I really admire how you have pulled all of this information together and you present each viewer with a great way to make professional video without the cost. I just got started making videos for MINDS-i, it this new extreme cool robot platform. A year ago I tried to get some videos on youtube but with little success. Now I’m starting over, using some of your techniques for optimizing my channel, and already just a few days later and my channel already is more successful.
I’d like you to take a look at my channel and see what you think.
here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/user/mymindsiinc
note: I haven’t tried to improve my videos yet like you have said in these videos. I know I will want to try the white background. Also I need to get the audio better. those are two things I’m going to improve in my next videos. What do you think?

Lighting makes a BIG difference. I’ve tried using a couple of different lighting resources around the house including a construction light type thing. So far natural light from an open window seems to work best. Based upon the room layout, I now plan to do my video blogging in the time range between 1 pm – 3 pm.

Bugger….the Kodak camera is now discontinued!
Hey Gideon,
I wanted to share my latest efforts … thanks to your Rapid Video Blogging course. I’m a slow implementer, as I suffer from “perfection syndrome”!!! grrr … however, I printed out the transcription of your course and followed step by step – and since seeing you do the white screen videos which I love the professionalism of them – you inspired me to give it a go, too. This is a list of what I used:
* a Canon Legria FS200 – discontinued now – but a few hundred dollars – and has a mike jack
… this really helped as it kept me on target – and less waffle and stuff ups
* the $30 microphone with the 4 metre lead you talked about – I bought mine at Dick Smith
* the work halogen lights from Bunnings – I think they cost $35 – and yes, they do give an amber effect
* a good tripod – I paid about $100 for this
* a small room with a white wall – actually it is probably a toilet that didn’t get finished
* I wrote out my script and stuck it on the wall opposite me – only about a metre away – so I could read it!
* I use Vegas Movie Studio HD 9.0 – it has taken me a little bit of getting used to – but practise has made that easier … and with this video – for the first time ever, I have combined:
– video
– music – the music came with the Vegas studio software
– pictures
– text
Your instructions were excellent. Once I got the hang of it – it was really easy.
Another tip I discovered – I had two places where I cut some video out (stuff ups!) – and I didn’t like how I could see the cut – so I put a picture there to emphasise a point – and no one would know that I cut something out of the original video.
I would love your feedback – and also wanted to share with others – that it is quite easy to get this effect yourself without having to outsource if you want to give it a go.
http://youtu.be/Z6Gmztl8Nfo
In fact … I believe the amber effect of the halogen lights, were a positive in this video, rather than a negative … and I was really interested to read the comment from Brian and your response above.
The effects I used on the words in this video I did in the Movie Studio software under “Effects”. It was great to play around with these.
Gideon … there is no way I could have achieved this result without your help … a huge THANK YOU!!!! Julie
Randy … thank you so much for your tips. That is really helpful. I haven’t discovered the transitions yet – but will definitely look at the cross dissolves. Cheers Julie
Julie,
You’re welcome. Here’s an example of cross dissolves in use, and also keeping the eyes in the upper third line area for the main subject:

I purposely shot this in old-style 4:3 ratio to look like classic television, and created a TV “frame” to add to the illusion.
Best, Randy
Hello
This was an extremely helpful video, I have started shooting videos and I didn’t know how to improve the quality of the video and how to get the lighting quite right. I think this is awesome! Keep putting up good content, I am going to buy one of your courses so I can learn more!

These videos are so helpful Gideon, thanks very much. The Kodak Zi8 isn’t available in the UK anymore – it seems to have been replaced by the Kodak PlayTouch. I’ve been looking at reviews for the Flip, PlayTouch and Sony Bloggie – would you recommend one over the other? The PlayTouch is the only one with a microphone jack.

Hi, Gideon!
I can’t believe I didn’t pay for this video tutorial series. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Thank you so much for all this information.
1) In the Rapid Video Blogging .pdf ebook, you mentioned using a digital voice recorder, but you don’t talk about it in your videos. Do you still recommend using one? Is it easy to sync the digital voice recorder with the video?
2) Who created your video intro & outro? I need someone to create an intro/outro for me!
Thanks again & all the best,
Melanie

I’m looking for my white background and there seem to be 3 choices of material:
1) Paper
2) Muslin
3) PVC
Are you able to comment on the pros and cons of each?
Many thanks.
James.
Very informative. The layout and light information was especially helpful.
Gideon,
Excellent stuff (and I’ve been doing audio and video recording and editing since 1977 and 1985 respectively)! I sent you a private e-mail to support with some questions so I won’t go into that here, but how do I get my avatar to show up in this discussion? I’ve already created an account at gravatar (I noticed that’s what was in the code) but nothing showing just yet.
Thanks for sharing your keen knowledge with the world…
Best,
Randy
Well, like magic my avatar photo is now up (about 2 hours later) so all handled!

I like what you do better than “my Business sucks” on blip! What do you think of the software Cyberlink power director ? I know you recommend Sony which is cheaper but this software is very fast to use, I am using the trial right now just to see what it does and I an very impressed. Another product I use is Animoto.com, the free one works ok
Keep up the good work.

Hi Gideon,
Fantastic content! Thank you so much!
Wondering if you would mind giving me a few tips on how you actually created the landing pages for these lessons? I have a wordpress blog, is it just a matter of creating an extra page? How do then make them not come up as pages to click on in your top bar?
I’m a Vocal Coach and have only recently set up an online platform and would like to do a similar thing in giving away material for opt-ins. At the moment I am using vimeo, but I think your way is so much more effective.
If you have any spare time at all, please check out my website and give me feedback on the video quality. At the moment I am only using my iphone to record videos but am quiet happy with the result for now. Here’s an example if you have time: http://www.thesongbirdtree.com/2012/02/15/top-3-tips-on-how-to-sing-like-lady-gaga-and-have-the-edge-of-glory/

Hi Gideon,
You’ve created some wonderful videos. I’ve recently delved into doing video SEO after doing organic SEO for some 12 years. And I am having success great success with video optimization. Including helping some friends of mine.
I started to create my video sales letter and did it with a Canon powershot camera 720p, a small lamp and background is a wall. I use a Macbook Pro with Screenflow. I just purchased a softbox lighting kit and 10 X 20 whitebackground after shooting the video and I will redo the video.
Here’s the video I did http://maturestudentcafe.com I’ll be redoing the video. I actually have a YouTube video optimization course I’ll be offering there. Those that have taken it have great results.
I also teach SEO at Joomlashack.com the biggest Joomla site on the net with some 1,500 students. All pre-recorded video screen capture videos. The SEO course at Joomlashack is going to launch in just a few days. So I’ve been busy creating over 50 videos (screencapture) between the two courses that I’ve created.

Hello Gideon,
Talking about equipment I would like to know, if possible, to let me know which remote and prompter software (or prompter package) are you using. I Have a photography podcast and it has been difficult to me to figure out the best solution for the prompter.
Thanks a lot for your time.

Gideon, You make it look so easy. Thank you. I enjoy watching and learning and I like your slow approach of repeating most things you have to say. The explanations and the break down step by step. It is almost overwhelming, and I wonder if I am able to keep-up with you. I am also taking a course on building a web site. I bought my domain name three days ago and I wrote my first page Wednesday evening and hopefully I can use the information you are teaching me on my web page. I look forward to further lessons. Thank you again for a clear picture you are painting. David

Thank you again Gideon! Great information as always.

Hi Gideon,
Good explanation and what choices to make. At the moment I have “Sony Cybershot”
camera, which records pretty good video. However the sound isn’t really good, but
I guess acceptable. There’s no mic in connection. When I’m ready I’ll just try it and see how it comes out. From there I’ll try to upgrade to better equipment.
Looking forward to watch your 3rd video, Hans
The one thing you haven’t yet mentioned is the script and whether you use a monitor to read from or that has an outline from which you speak, or whether you have memorized what you are going to say.
‘First Class’ information Gideon, presented in a very professional and relaxed way!
Clear, simple, fast. Great job, Gideon, thank you.
Is it possible to buy a tripod for this camera?
Jon

I want to do videos of a) me speaking, b) drawing explanations, and c) screen shots of software.
For b), I bought a watcom tablet, since that’s what Khan Academy uses. But I realized that it would be better for my business to have an iPad, so I returned the tablet. And guess what? I won an iPad 3 !!!
But what drawing pad software do you use, that you can upload your drawings into video?
I’m struggling with even the right words to find You Tube videos on this, so I can learn how to do this myself.
Thanks a million.

Hi Gideon.
Thanks for these videos. I have really been impressed and it has so far helped me to make my videos look more like I want them.
Well done

Hi Gideon,
Great information re your setup and good to see a floor plan as well. One other thing that would be helpful is the dimensions of your setup to get an idea of the size of the space required, eg: distance between lights used on the background; distance between background and subject – and then the distance between subject and camera. Thanks and regards.

My previous business made (and still does, I sold my share) online product video’s for some of the worlds biggest consumer electronics companies and national retailers and the thing we found was that all our clients wanted clean white backgrounds because there is less distraction and they wanted them to blend into the background with custom boarder-less video players, so it looked like it was part of the page, just like many of the still images you will see on Amazon for example.
.
It does make the end results look more professional ( just beware of filming white products on a white background, it can be a pain to get right) though after seeing 1000’s of these I used to yearn for some more colour too
I’m just in the process of setting up my home studio and I’m using a lot of the same gear. I used to have a professional on-line product video company and when choosing the new home setup, we got the Canon 600D for stills and video, the only problem is that it is not a true autofocus and the depth of field can be shallow if you are using it for close ups during three quarter shot like holding things close up to the lens.
We also use a Panasonic HDC-SD900 Full HD video camera, its the same price as the Canon and has better colour rendering due to the triple sensor. If it wasn’t for the stills we have to take, the Panasonic would be a better video choice producing a better image than our semi-pro HD Sony’s of about 5 years ago for a third of the price, great for zoom edits with little loss of detail.
Thanks for great info you have, even for someone who has worked in the business, this a fast moving area and you need to keep up to keep on top
Another great video Gideon. I’m learning hepas here.
As a start out ‘flip style’ video camera, what do recommend since Kodak Zi8 and Flip are out of business.
Can you get a remote to operate the camera if you are shooting on your own.
I’m looking forward to more videos
In the video about video, you mention bumping the ISO to improve color. That will improve brightness. If you want absolutely perfect color balance, with no green skin tones, use the Canon’s Custom White Balance feature, along with a target made for such purposes.
My favorite is the One Shot Digital Calibration Target from http://www.photovision.com (many similar devices are available elsewhere). The One Shot Target has three absolutely neutral stripes on it. These represent deep shadow detail (deep charcoal), midtones (gray card gray), and upper (diffuse) highlight detail (near-white). A DVD that comes with the target explains how to use the target to set perfect exposure and then perfect white balance. Net result when used properly is that you have no color casts in the image (still or video), and everything looks great, with little or no post-production adjustment.
I’ve recommended that target to hundreds of photographers who have used it successfully to speed up their workflows. I’ve used it myself when producing training videos using fluorescent lights. It is truly a great tool.
This is great information Gideon!
I have only just started making video and so your information is very helpful. I started with a Flip – had problems with the voice recording and have now got a Zi8 which I am very pleased with.
The next thing I need to look to is the lighting. So far I am using regular daylight but that will be more difficult as we get into winter!
Thanks for all the help!
I’m loving it

I recommend -for those who can afford it- the ZOOM H4N. Really good high quality sound, small and compact and takes good sound of surrounding.
Pros:
Higher quality than most cameras, since cameras compress the sound.
Not all cameras allow you to plugin headphones to hear if the sound is good and the speaker of most cameras(if any) are bad so you can’t distinguish if the sound is good or not until you’re with the material in the computer. The ZOOM can.
You can plug in a microphone if you want to have a “shootgun” microphone, which is a very directional microphone that only takes most of its sound from where its pointing, or the “mosquitos” that Gideon uses in the video above. This gives you a broader selection of microphones since the cameras(depending on which) has another output for its sound.
It has better range of the sound in Hertz.
Cons:
You have to sync the sound afterwards in the computer since it’s being recorded on another device.
You have to have batteries and extra batteries to it and of course, it’s another device you have to use and bring with you.
Without a microphone plugged in to it, the built in microphones are set to 120 or 90 degrees so your recording will include a lot of sounds from the surroundings. This is not a problem inside, unless the place bounces the sound a lot so it sounds almost like ecos, but if you’re outside, you can get a lot of background noise from people, wind, cars and so on.
But a really good one for those who wants extra quality.. totally different level from my Canon 7D and 5D Mark II, even if I plug in a microphone into those that are made for DSLR cameras. Completely different world of sound!
And the sync afterwards is pretty damn easy once you get a hang of it!
Good afternoon Gideon, very good explanation of this effect is fantastic white background really lends an air of purity in video, professionalism, very interesting …..
Gideon, thank you for these videos! You didn’t mention what software you are using to mix the music into the middle of your video. Is that also Sony Studio or is it a separate software?
Thank you for a great job!

Whenever I do editing myself, I use ScreenFlow. My video editors use Adobe After Effects.
Good stuff Gideon. Question: In looking at the ScreenFlow site, it says that one of the cons is that there is “No way to subtitle or add text to screencasts.” What does this mean?
So, how do you get that clean white background? A green screen? And how do you get those graphics to pop in and out to the left in the video?
is the sony software comparable or better than camtasia?
Dear Gideon,
I am going through your lessons to learn how to do video blogging for my new website.
I also signed up for iphone video hero
I have an iphone5 and I am hoping I can make videos with that OK
you recommend the audio technics ATR – 3350 condenser micro phone.
Can you also use that for podcasting or do you also need another microphone for just
recording podcasts.
i am trying to get my head around all the equipment I need without spending enormous amounts of money on things I don’t need.
Chris Ducker recommends the audio technica 2020usb microphone for blogcasting.
I bought the glib which i did not find useful so I am still working out what to buy to set up the iPhone in one spot for videoing.
Thanks your videos are great. I hope I can learn to do this!!!
Deb
Hi Gideon:
I am enjoying following your video lessons – thank you!
My question is: did you recommend anywhere a remote for the iPhone 5? I bought a monopod (after your video), and now I need a mic and a remote.
Can’t wait till I have them so that I can make some similar videos. I practised walking around the house with the monopod and my iPhone 5 when it arrived – and missed a perfect occasion to use it the other night when I was in the middle of a crowd with the speakers at the front. I am short, and it seemed as if the prerequisite to be there was a minimum height of about 6 feet! If this is going to be the case, I will need to take my monopod wherever I go.
I’ll check back.
Ann
The information is great! I don’t know which I like better the information or your accent and your so cute too!
Why thank you Nancy!
In the RapidVideo Blogging book you highlight a digital voice recorder, yet above I see
Sony ECM AW3 Microphone
Sony UWP-V1 Microphone
Audio Technica Microphone
Did you use add the digital voice recorder to the video via the editing software originally?
Should I just buy a wireless mike instead?
DP
Hello Gideon,
I read somewhere that Screen flow does not allow you to add text. Is that true? What do you use to add text?
great info.
I did have a question: Under the Video Transcript title, you have a link called ‘click here to read the transcript.’ When I click on the link, the full transcript opens on the same page. That a really cool function. Can you tell me what it’s called. I would like to use it in my wordpress site.
Gideon
I think this is more a matter of personal preference. I find the total whiteness to be refreshing and it doesn’t allow distraction. It has a clean, crisp appearance – but that’s just my opinion. Thx!

Hey Lili
You can just use Windows Movie Maker for a start – it’s free on PC.
However, it’s a bit frustrating to use as soon as you want to add more fancy things like extra audio or video tracks.
But for just the basics, it can work well.
Gideon
Correct!
Hey Florian
Yes the course is currently closed to the general public – has been for quite a few months now.
I’ll open up the course again soon some time – just keep your eyes on your email inbox…
Gideon
Hey Rob
It depends on the kind of quality you want, and where you are getting your editor from.
Here are some options:
– Students from a video/film school – anything more than they can earn at the local pizza shop, which is not much
– Professional local editor – can cost an arm and a leg…
– Outsourced professional editor – anywhere from $10/hr to say $30/hr, depending on where you go…
Gideon
Great work Jennie!
I agree – it really is easy once you start taking action!
Just watched some of your vids – you’re great on camera!
Gideon
Hey Joy
Any chance you could show me an example of a video with the problem?
It could be due to a number of things, but I want to see the video first before I can give a good answer…
Gideon
No problem Christine!
Glad to be of service!
Gideon-
This brings up a great point and I’m curious about your opinion. I know some bloggers who pull inappropriate comments immediately because of promoting another site, profanity, or abusing others in their community. There are other bloggers who keep both the positive and the negative while even others have all comments approved before posting. What is your position on blog comments and more importantly, why have you come to that conclusion?
Best regards,
-Ron
One thing that often causes bloated file sizes is recording audio at a bit rate that’s higher than necessary to get the quality you need.
I use Digital Media Converter Pro to convert files post-production. Here’s a page from their website that discusses some of the considerations that impact media file sizes:
http://www.deskshare.com/resources/articles/dmcpro_ReduceFileSize.aspx
hi There
it is not for me but i will give my opinion. ; )
i would but a background and get close to you… i think it would avoid any distraction on the background…
Gideon doesn’t appear to be responding to questions on this site anymore.
Hey Danillo
My video editor uses After Effects for the cool graphic effects. I won’t be able to tell you how to do those. Whenever I do my own videos, I just use ScreenFlow which also has some funky text animations and transitions – not as cool as After Effects though…
Gideon
Hey Brian
Yeah you were definitely mistaken
There are 7 lessons in total.
If you’re subscribed at http://www.RapidVideoBlogging.com, you should receive all of them eventually.
I think they are spaced out to be delivered over a period of 2-3 weeks.
Gideon
Hey Brian
I do still respond, but it’s just been a little busy lately with the re-opening of Rapid Video Blogging.
Talk soon!
Gideon
Not sure what you mean by “edit live video”?
ScreenFlow is designed to record your screen, and then you can edit that recording, but I also use it for normal “moving picture” videos that I record with my video camera.
Hope that answers your question.
Gideon
You can do these yourself with the right tool. See my post below regarding ProShow Gold from Photodex. Pull in some stills (or you can take them right from your video!), create a small slide show with cool text effects, transitions, etc. Render it as an avi that you save to your computer, and bring that into your video editor. Drop the intro avi from ProShow in front of your video with a transition and you’re all set.
Whether you include audio with your intro avi in ProShow or use no audio and then pull in the audio track during video editing is up to you. If you include audio with the ProShow avi, you’ll probably want to fade it out at the end of the little intro avi you’re creating, which is easy to do. Then you can fade in the audio for the main clip at the transition between the clips. Experiment a bit both ways to see what you like best.
Thanks for the tips both Ian and Gideon.I will buy a good voice mic and try that.I will let you know the results,Thank you very much
Hi Gideon
I really love your work and ideas. Can you please tell me what program you use to send our your reports like the report called “road map to become a blogger” i also write material but i want to write in a format similar to yours where people can down load the report simply and easily.
Hi Gideon
Great videos. I have a fear of being in front of a camera. I have only just started to to use screen capture using text and photos and audio. I like your drawings which I relate more to. Do you draw on a drawing pad or whiteboard and take photo of and import to a power point slide? The reason I also use screen capture is the writing is on the screen for me to remember what to say. When standing in front of a camera my mind goes blank. Do you have notes stuck on your camera to prompt you to what to talk about?
Julie,
Well done on your promotion for the Bali experience. As a professional audio and video editor, I offer a couple of tips:
1. When shooting video, try to shoot the eyes at the upper third line. If you divide the frame into 3 horizontal strips using 2 lines placed a third apart, the upper line is where the eyes should be.
2. The aspect ratio of your footage did not convert correctly to your final output. That’s why the frame looks skinny instead of filling the whole screen. There should be a setting in the editing program you used where you tell the program what that ratio should be. It should know this automatically but even pro editing software can be fooled.
3. Instead of chop cuts from you to the photos, use cross dissolves. This is especially important with the subject matter you are discussing.
Hope that helps…
Randy
Randy … thank you so much for your tips. That is really helpful. I haven’t discovered the transitions yet – but will definitely look at the cross dissolves. Cheers Julie
Julie,
You’re welcome. Here’s an example of cross dissolves in use, and also keeping the eyes in the upper third line area for the main subject:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eadx3LdNFDU
I purposely shot this in old-style 4:3 ratio to look like classic television, and created a TV “frame” to add to the illusion.
Best, Randy
Well, like magic my avatar photo is now up (about 2 hours later) so all handled!
hey man could you please subscribe to my channel im called TheHLMBoss thanx and could you also get others to subscribe thanx please just check them out (my Vids)
Had the same issue with no Kodak cameras any longer. Turns out the iPhone makes a great video camera. You can purchase inexpensive adapters so it will attach to a tripod and so that you can connect an external microphone.
One more tip about the One Shot Digital Calibration Target… If you’re working with any digital camera or video camera that supports Custom White Balance, balancing with the target will get rid of the “amber” effect from tungsten halogen “work” lights. But if your tungsten halogen bulbs are rated 3200 K color temperature, you can also set the camera to a “pre-set white balance” for tungsten light, OR, dial in 3200 K using the Kelvin setting. Any of these methods will eliminate the warm glow. Lower wattage home incandescent lamps are around 2700 K, so try that setting if you’re using low wattage incandescent lamps.
The “color cycling” phenomenon some folks get with fluorescents is sometimes related to the type of AC power source in use for the fluorescent lights. Part of the solution is to be sure you are using true single phase power, and not a “split-phase” source. Ask your building electrician. Another part of the solution is to be sure the lamps you use are designed for photography/videography, and certified “flicker-free” by the manufacturer. For best results, the lamps should also have a CRI (color rendering index) of 91 or higher. Certain lamps from Eizo, Alzo, Larson, and Westcott meet these standards (there are surely others). Still another part of the solution is to be sure the shutter speed or frame rate is under 1/60 second, so record at 30P (for countries with 60Hz AC power), or 25P (for countries with 50Hz AC power), for best results. Higher frame rates (video) or shutter speeds (stills) will exaggerate the color cycling.
