Ok… so for New Years 2013 I tried something a little different. And as you can see from the comments, it was not a totally popular thing to to.
I think what happened, is that I got really carried away with my new iPhone 5 that I just got over the Xmas break… and I could not wait to get my first little video out.
Needless to say (after reading the comments on YouTube), I wont be doing any more car videos – that’s for sure lol!
BUT…
Don’t let the car thing put you off from the very important message that I have inside the video.
Go ahead and leave your comment too… but I do “get” the car thing now if you know what I mean 😉
Gideon
Yikes! Informal is good, but not while you’re driving. I can’t focus on what you’re saying for being concerned that you’re not fully attending to the traffic. Try walking in the park, beach, anything else except while driving.
Sorry mate it didn’t work for me, too many distractions, noise etc, what was the purpose?
I sooner see you parked at the side of the road/in a coffee shop etc vs. driving. Way too much distraction from the message you are trying to share.
The health is the weath! Happy New Year Gideon!
I mount my iPhone 4S to the windshield of my car. I bought the suction cup device from Best Buy for less than $30. The background (GPS maybe?) is distracting.
I think the white background/DSLR filmed videos work better for me
HI Gideon. Happy New Year!
The “off the cuff” videos work very well, but like the others, I agree that not wanting you to crash is very distracting!
Personally I wouoldn’t mind you not looking at the camera for this one so we could all relax a bit more!
I agree that FOCUS (Follow One Course Until Successful – thanks Tony Robbins….) is the key to making permanent changes such as the resolutions you discussed.
All the best for 2013 Gideon, and I look forward to more of your videos!
So glad the nose hairs were trimmed first, bad angle, poor audio, Really enjoy your other vids that are less distracting. I can see if you need to get a message out quickly when that “nugget” turns the light on. It may have a place but prefer your polished vids more.
well gideon i’m new to your stuff and don’t know your polished videos…
but i love raw stuff, real life tidbits. i like seeing people engaging their own lives,
and what solutions they offer. that inspires me.
work out better camera angles, this is your own movie, your own hollywood.
what would you want to see? i want some movement, shots out the window,
feel the vibe of you rolling with your life. ….
kudos for taking it to the streets, literally.
roll on, brotherman, roll on.
Please do not film in while your driving!! It’s very dangerous If you not watch on the road you Can get a accident!! And you thinking to me Can never gonna anything But your wrong!!! You dont now how much people dying whit even not watching on the road!! I dont wanna scare you But I’m worried That something could happen to you.!! Please promise do not film again while your driving!! And If anything could happen to you van never give is tips again!! And That’s too bad!!
So you should focus on one thing, not drive and talk all at once… 😉 Anyway happy new year and good luck with your goals.
Hey Gideon, while I never wait for new year’s to create a new positive habit for myself, the message and the tip on how to do it was spot on.
About shooting video and driving at the same time, don’t let these people talk you out of it, I have done it plenty of times only I actually LOOK at the road.
You said you were going to focus on driving but kept constantly watching at the camera lens LOL a habit maybe? 😛
Take care and all the best on this 2013 my man! 😉
Hi Gideon
Can work if you get yourself a Chauffeur!
Have a good 2013.
Keeping your eye on the road should be your resolution! Smh! I wouldn’t watch these driving videos cause I be to worried you kill some one,bad example! But I do enjoy ur other vids
Hey whats wrong with experimentation? That’s the art of creation. You hold the conversation well whilst driving. It gives a sense of realism to the video which I like. Resolutions work when they have a deep meaning behind them. I find it useful to really think about the reasons for making change and the impact it will have on others. The more value we give to the goals the more likely we are to take action. Self belief is also achieved when we make consistent movement. Action creates Traction ; )
You mentioned that our minds can only really focus on one thing at a time which in itself is an answer as to why it doesn’t work for you to do videos while driving. Plus, I agree with the other commentators that it is very distracting because I am so concerned you are going to crash. I love that you are taking risks and that is inspiring. But this particular one just isn’t working.
Why not doing videos from your toilets? I am a big fan of your work, but this type of video doesn’t serve you….. Hope it’s the last from your car. Best regards!!!
Great video! Really liked the topics and am experiencing the same walk / run scenario. I think this video has inspired me to do a video-a-day experiment myself , Thanks! Another idea you may want to try is walking at a leisurely pace around your town at a park etc… that would be cool to watch and interesting to see your neighborhood places of interest etc… Thanks again always Love your videos and they have been a huge help! Thanks!
Too distracting for all. Plus got to get rid of the nose hairs bro!
Thanks Gideon, I love the raw videos like this and can work very well, When Frank kern shot a video while driving, he had the camera set up on the side and he didn’t look at it once, just talked. maybe this might be the answer… I know the temptation for you to connect with your audience but not a good idea while driving. LOVE the outside action type videos though, makes it more personal for your audience. keep it up in my view along side your studio production.
Where was the actionable content? Still, I guess “Youtube marketer dies in car crash LIVE on video!!!! (thumbs up, for horrifying violence!)” would be a title with a good chance of going viral…
1) The noise, of the automobile engine interrupts your conversation. I am latinAmerican and it would be interesting that you subtitles, in English, your videos. For me it is easier to read in English.
2) It would be interesting to show us how to do video courses, and what would be the minimum equipment necesary. Thank you
Thanks Gideon, that is certainty something to think about and do! Happy New Year to you.
Experiments YES
= NO HEALTH
Experiments in cars NO }:-\
NO LIFE
***(LOL only a Boetie 😉 could do a video about his new health resolution whilst driving)
Experiments with Google+ Hangouts streaming to YouTube YES
Hi Gideon,
I liked the experiment and especially the spontaneity. So I vote for more experiments. I would like to hear more about your fitness journey, I’m in need of real inspiration here as well. I loved your recommendation about visualizing the action not just the end result, that is brilliant.
Best regards,
Tim
Hey Travis – yeah, I am a little bit divided on the whole thing still – after today’s comments especially. But I think there is a place for well produced videos that are created on the spot still – perhaps not in the car though (mental note taken!)
I hope you weren’t watching on the big screen Michael? hehehe…
Ah thanks Bronnie – one of the few positive comments today lol! And about Crossfit… I’ll be joining soon – have heard some amazing things from it!
Hey Amid – looks like you’re doing some great things there at StartBusinessTV(dot)Com! Keep up the great work!
yeah agreed Gabe! Thanks for your support! Will be creating some other fun videos with different environments for sure!
Ah cool extra tips Cheptiony! Rest, hydration, sleeping and exercise… and I might add healthy eating too!
Hi Les – thanks for your great feedback and also letting me know what you’d like to know about more. Were you interested in some one-on-one time with me? I do undertake that every now and then if you’re interested – let me know…
Thank you Bradley for your positive comment! Yes, I was fully pumped about quickly creating a video while driving for my YouTube channel – but next time I will pick a better environment – ie not driving!
yup – will definitely be getting into those kinda vids more this year. there are some really amazing spots here on the sunshine coast in australia that I’d like to show everyone!
Hey Paul – ok cool thanks – point taken
This is last car video! I want to keep it safe for everyone involved!
no probs lurta! you’re very welcome!
hehehe – that is true! although, more recently it has become more important to have better production value on YouTube too. I think a nice compromise may work well – which I will attempt in my next video!
ok cool Finda – thanks for your feedback! Any other kind of information you’d like me to share inside my future videos?
ok gotit thanks Amnuai! my next vid will not be in the car lol! LOVE Thailand btw! Stunning place!
Hah! Yeah the traffic was fast – but it was on a road that I have traveled many times before and know very well. And there was not a TON of traffic – so it was actually very safe all things considered. But yes, for the benefit of everyone, I wont be doing car videos any longer!
ok cool – have you seen the work from Leslie at becomeablogger . com? he has two courses there for free – one that teaches you how to setup your blog, and the other how to setup your newsletter. both courses are amazing!
Celebrity Status? Who me? lol! Nah… but I might be a moderately sized fish in a very small pond! Don’t worry though, this video and it’s comments have been very good for keeping my ego in place 😉
Ok cool, gotit Greg! I do struggle a bit to keep my videos shorter! For these kinda videos I want to limit them to about 3 mins… thanks for the reminder. Will create a separate video later showing the tools I use.
Hey Jérôme – sorry to have caused you nervousness! Next video will be more relaxed… promise!
Thanks Buddy, I am working on converting (making them come inside) and once I get it, I will back to you for asking for help with promoting… maybe a bit away, today I mailed out my 1st letter to 505 asking for the order… feel free to register to get and comment my work … Happy New year buddy
ok cool – point taken (no pun intended!) I’ll see what I can do to add a bit more structure to my vids!
uhm… no, I dont think you should attempt driving while filming – everyone here on this page seems to agree with that at least lol!
Yeah there is that – there are many kinds of videos online though. The medium is VERY different to that of TV. Much more interactive too – eg leaving comments like this etc. But I do get your point about keeping it more brief. I’ll have some more thoughts about lengthy vs short videos on YouTube later – cos there is a place for both, and something in between too. Thanks for your feedback! Appreciate feedback from pro’s…
yeah I agree – I was actually going to add some insets of other views from my drivers seat… but then thought that might freak people out too much lol! Thanks for the great tips too!
Thanks for your response Gideon, much appreciated.
Yes, depending on your scale of charges, I would be keen to have some ongoing One On One with you, particularly in setting up The YouTube Channel properly. I do want to do many video’s so it would be great if I could learn from you and do them or some portion of them myself. Let me know what charges apply and we’ll go from there.
Many thanks again, and well done.
Geez, does Rich Schefren, Frank Kern and countless others cop this much crap for making a video while driving? And, you all have never had a conversation with a passenger(s) while looking at them and into the rear vision mirror etc? Looked at the speedometer constantly? Out the window? What in heck is the difference?
I really don’t see the problem. I’ve done it in the past. I just crap on and don’t look at the camera. No different to crapping on without camera rolling!
I couldn’t watch this Gideon. This was very dangerous for you to do a video while driving. In 1982 my sister was killed by a drunk driver (she had also been drinking). It only takes a split second for something to happen. Even when a person has other people in the car while driving and everyone is talking, the attention span is shortened. I like the idea of more personal videos, but please, not while you are the one driving!
sound is good.
but i like to say that your almost every video is helpful for me.
Love the experiment. Amzing what you can now do with your ‘phone’! Would love to seemore ‘off the cuff’ vids like this with useful content about how the shot was set up technically. Maybe something like a credits roll at the movies where you show us the experiment and then do a studio take at the end explaining what you did to get the final product and how you di it. I’m all for how to’s – (BTW not so much detail that you will be left with nothing to sell later on! LOL)
yeah – I reckon daily videos (or more regular ones) that are not as polished could be a nice way to build stronger bonds with those people who are interested in more. but I think I am going to adjust a few things for upcoming videos – this little experiment has been extremely useful…
Hi Grant – thank you for your encouraging comment! Yes, I think my “off the cuff” videos will get more polished as I create more and think about better ways of presenting the information. All the best!
Yes I agree – some great tips there from LearningGuitartunes! Will definitely be implement some of them…
Hah! Thanks for your concern! much appreciated. To put your mind at ease though, it was a very straight forward road I was driving, with no major decisions to be made or any other distractions. But trust me, after reading all these comments I do get the point lol! Thanks again!
Ok – watch my next one – would be good to get your opinion on that too!
Phew! Glad you’re staying with my Robert! Don’t worry, I wont be creating more videos in the car, so you can rest without worry now 😉
What do you mean by “creating a passionate message”?
Ok cool – gotit! More informal (non-car) videos coming up…
Hah! Hope you weren’t watching on a really big screen – the deets would be kinda gory 😉
Hey Ana – ah there is a really good mic that I may do a video on. I dont have one yet, but you can use it with your iPhone and the quality is amazing!
Yeah I thought about creating another channel for the more regular videos – but then the issue is that I will have to run 2 channels. And one channel is enough work already lol!
Ok cool thanks for the tip Bryan! I checked out Jessica’s videos and they look much better than mine! But of course, I wont be creating car videos any more
Ah thank you for your honesty Fancylooks! Much appreciated! This is exactly why I run these experiments – to get REAL feedback from REAL people. That is the only way I can improve, and give the people what they want!
No sure how the camera position would make it safer. I often look at my speedometer while driving – is that dangerous too? hehe
Ok cool – I think the point of my video was not so much doing the video in the car. It was more a matter of being spontaneous and being able to get the content out to my audience fast and in a fun way.
Hah! Thanks Yaro! Great to have you watching my videos… FINALLY! LOL!
Oh why thank you very much Ameer! Much appreciate your optimism!
Yes great idea Susan – recording outside (and on the beach where it is windy for example) can be rather challenging. I’ll have some tips on that shortly too…
Ok cool – thanks for the feedback LetsWallaWalla! My next video will be better… promise!
Yup – will do… thanks for your concern!
Ok cool, no worries Patrick. The point of the video was to be able to spontaneously create valuable content for my audience as the ideas come to me. Often, I get really inspired by amazing new ideas, but would then have to wait to get to my studio before I can record the videos, but which time the energy for the topic has often dwindled a bit. But dont worry, I have learnt a lot from this little experience here… just read the other comments 😉
Thanks Michael! Oh btw – I have not ignored your message in my inbox – will get to it soon… ish!
Ah Eric – you’re still around! Thanks my friend, and a Happy New Year to you too!
Ok cool thanks for the tip, however I’ll be moving to more safer environments for future videos. I don’t like freaking out my audience lol!
Ok thanks for the feedback Emmanuel – any more suggestions for topics?
I love that little breakdown from Tony… FOCUS: Follow One Course Until Successful! Thanks for the reminder Mike! More “off the cuff” vids coming soon… but on safer grounds 😉
Ok cool thanks Peter! Yeah I was just so pumped about getting the content out… but I will get my environment better next time…
Oh why thank you very much thegreentreesmusic – and welcome to my channel! Great to have you here. And thank you also for your encouraging comment!
Ok thank you for your concern Thirza – it was quite a safe road though. But I get what you’re saying. Next vid will be somewhere else… more safe!
lol! thanks Ydonkov!
Hah thanks Sergio! So great to see you sticking around! Much appreciating your support my friend!
Ah now why did I not think of that! hehe thanks Dawie!
Ok thanks Tony! Will separate my driving from creating videos
Ooh I love your comment – especially the last bit – “Action creates Traction!” Thanks for your inspiration!
Doh… yes, I obviously should follow my own advice some more lol! Thanks for your concern!
LOL! I think you win the prize for the funniest comment hehehe! I think there are two videos I wont do now – car videos, and toilet videos 😉
Hey Benjamin – glad I could be of some inspiration, and not totally freak you out with my driving while recording a video! And yes, some more videos coming up with interesting backgrounds… coming soon!
LOL! Oh but I shave every day!
Yes… so the only thing I have to remove now to make the videos better, is the car lol! Thanks for your feedback Peter – much appreciated!
Hah! Nice one KickstartsHQ! The actionable content was a little later on in the video. Where I talk about creating new habits. But maybe the car thing was too distracting this time round…
Ok great! First person to actually answer both of my questions from my email correct! This may count in your favor
Cheers Graham! And a happy new year to you too for 2013!
lol – only a boetie yes!
Ok – the fitness thing has been huge for me in the last few months. I had a period at the start of 2012 where I did NO exercise. And that was a really bad thing for my health and everything else too. But back on track again now
Ah finally! Yes I don’t see people like Kern and Schefren copping it as much. Maybe their audiences are not as concerned about their safety as my audience is 😉 My audience cares about me it seem – which of course is a wonderful thing hehehe!
Sorry about your sister Naomi – don’t worry though, I wont be doing any more car videos. I have learned my lesson
Awesomeness! Any specific videos you’d like to see from me VioTutorials?
Good idea Geoff! I’ll definitely be sharing with everyone what equipment I’m using for my shoots – coming soon!
You are welcome, you help us a lot with your ideas, I am glad to help you back however I can.
Dear Gideon Yes I did go to become a blogget it is great what is offered there!!! would be good if you could also go into a bit of blog stuff on your channel
Because when you looking at speedometer your mind working on driving a car. When you looking at camera, your mind working on the subjects to talk. Mounting a camera on top of dashboard or positions around there, it would make you easy to look at the road and the camera at the same time. But, if you good at multi tasking or which way you comfortable with, go for it.
Awesome thanks Gideon. I would like to create a driving video myself one day because there is something about the atmosphere it brings to the video of which is hard to describe. This make Youtube great because we can be so inventive on how we represent ourselves. Keep up the awesomeness
Glad to hear it. After posting my comment I then read the comments you had received and saw there were many concerned. LOL, we all need our hands slapped every once in awhile, no matter who we are. I’m just glad you have enough subscribers who are more concerned about your well being than what particular message you are trying to convey at the moment. I look forward to seeing more of you … safe and sound!
Thank you Naomi, I was going to make that point too. Similar family tragedy. Thanks Gideon for confirming you won’t be doing that again because I like your stuff and find it really useful!
Hi Gideon! I liked your experiment. I liked the more personal feel to your video. Great job!!
Hi Gideon – stay safe and keep it on the road! Experiments are good. Maybe try it from the passenger seat…
I like the videos that have tips in them – thanks so much.
Hi Gideon,
Great stuff as always. Yes, please keep up the experiments.
Regards….Ron
HEY GUYS PLEASE HELP ME GET TO 200 SUBSCRIBERS 9 TO GO!!! PLEASE HELP OUT
haha yeah i reckon, still, good on ya for tryin somethin different, be interesting to see what else you’ve got in mind. Hey I’ve relocated to Springfield lakes, Brisbane from Rotorua NZ.
Have you got any friends, groups or connections in brizzy, I can network or just hang out with who are into youtube marketing and stuff?
Id like to be around like minded people…enjoyed that book you recommended…Your Life Your Legacy..by Roger Hamilton
Hi Gideon, YOU appear in my video about my new years resolutions. I do like the car video and the casual manner in which you talk to us. Thanks for the tips, I do agree with your health being number 1 on your list. So many people forget about it, until it’s almost too late.
Hope to meet you this year.
Totsiens. (spelling?) Brent
Hey Brent – come and visit me on the Sunshine Coast! Love your accent btw 😉
Trying something different is great Gideon. And I love the work you usually do. But don’t you think with as many young people dying because of texting, and using the phone while driving, that you’re setting a poor example? I mean the disclaimer is nice and all, but kids will think if you can do it, they can too. I think video work while driving is NOT a good idea, and shows poor judgment. Nothing personal Gideon, just an observation.
Would love to visit you Gideon, or if it’s too hot up there you can come south and visit me. Cheers, Brent
I can’t watch this video completely but I answer to your questions.
1-your idea was very interesting and i share it in my Facebook.
2-I almost like any video but if one day i want to create a video, I like it be funny, learning, dreamy and it make people happiness and hopeful.
Hi Gideon,
Thanks for the video, really enjoyed it.
As for your questions, yes please continue with the experiments.
Question 2. i will need to answer later as need to give it some thought.
Thanks
.
Congrats on the jogging success Gideon! You are 100% correct. If you don’t have your health you have nothing. I have been working out my whole life and jog an hour three times a week. Have done that for 30+ years. Also, other things like dirt bike riding but the key is as you say, you HAVE to make it part of your lifestyle. Your daily routine must include working out. If I don’t do it I feel guilty as can be! Take care.
Wow. I’m glad I watched this vid. Thank you for sharing that. Really. I’ve been trying to be a healthier person for a while now and I’m glad that I came across this vid. Its gonna help me finally make an achievement
Gideon! Your steering wheel is on the wrong side of your car! 😉
How do you create a message about your business without sounding pitchy and making it more personal?
i can just imagine people looking at you and thinking you’re talking to yourself 😛
I would say this is safe. Taking a phone call behind the wheel is also safe (hands free)
There are tons of people vlogging from a motorcycle too, it’s ok!
What you could improve is the camera position, try to put it higher because you look weird from such a low angle. Almost looking up your nose there 😉

I was just about to say that!
Hah – it sure is! We call it “right” though over here hah…
