How Silly Mistakes Can Make Your Videos Better

It’s funny how a simple conversion can make you realize something quite profound!

Recently, I had a chat to one of my students. During our chat, she mentioned something that came as a slight surprize… but it all made sense after I thought about it for a while.

She said that she really liked watching my videos because they are “imperfect”!

Watch my video to see how having imperfect videos can actually help you connect better with your audience, and get more people to watch it!

  3. Juho Tunkelo

Ok mission accomplished, I got to ask: what the heck’s that on your t-shirt? Female… something something?

  4. Gideon Shalwick

hah! I think it’s a band from the 70’s or something. btw… did the video work for you?

  5. Juho Tunkelo

    sure, works without a hitch.

  6. Shlomo Yeshurun

    Awesome advice Gideon!

  7. Angus McDonald

Awesome Gideon. Clever video just going over previous material – giving it a slightly different intro and twist.

  8. Learnguitartunes

Couldn’t agree more to this video. My first video is mega embarrassing for me too, I look and sound VERY nervous. But this video believe it or not is my biggest to date and most popular video I have on my channel. It isn’t perfect, but it delivers what the audience wants and hits that threshold. Since then I have improved greatly, I also think peoples comments have helped me improve too, your audience are the only people who can tell you exactly what they want.

  9. Nathan Wei

    Good advice. Thanks.

  10. Gideon Shalwick

Cheers Shlomo – LOVE your name btw!

  11. Gideon Shalwick

Cheers Angus! Yeah it’s an oldie but a goodie – amazing how many people still struggle with this issue!

  12. Gideon Shalwick

Hey Jack! Great to see you’ve been on a similar journey! And awesome to see that you’re pulling it through! MASSIVE opportunities for you on YouTube! Keep it up!

  13. Gideon Shalwick

Thanks Nathan! Got any specific video requests?

  14. Joel Sweeney

Thanks for this post Gideon. Your advice “Get your imperfect videos out there while aiming at perfection” really resonated wit me.

  15. James Roughton

Great video as always. I have learned how to apply the Demining techniques and they really work if you use them. We all makes mistakes and we have to learn our lesson from the mistakes and more forward.

  16. Gideon Shalwick

awesome stuff Joel! What’s your next video about? hehe

  17. Gideon Shalwick

yeah totally! Deming is a TOTAL LEGEND! I first came across him during my Master of Engineering Management study at university. Didn’t realize back then how powerful his ideas were!

  18. Learnguitartunes

Thank you really appreciate the comment and I am hoping big things can come from youtube, I am a believer that if you plug away and work hard then your hard work will pay off at some point. Like anything I guess, you learn from your mistakes but you can only get better. J

  19. Gideon Shalwick

Yup – very much in line with the principles from Deming that I talk about inside my vid. Watching your progress with interest!

  20. לימור בנרון לוי רפלקסולוגיה

I agree Gideon – I’ve been told showing my imperfection and humanity, as well as my humor as part of my authentic personality makes me more relatable. My first imperfect videos are my highest viewed and still get thumbs up :) Thanks Leemore
    ps people love bloopers

  21. Learnguitartunes

Thanks Gideon, looking forward to your next video as always.

  22. Gideon Shalwick

Glad you brought humor into the equation too! I reckon that makes a HUGE difference too. I dont think humor works for everyone though… eg in my case, the best humor I can come up with, is making fun of myself lol!

  23. לימור בנרון לוי רפלקסולוגיה

works for both of us ;) keep up the great work!

  24. NAGYbomb

I couldn’t agree more w/ the Deming philosophy.
btw: #15. “get your imperfect videos out there while aiming at perfection.” – Gideon Shalwick ;-)

  25. Gideon Shalwick

    hehe nice one NAGYbomb!

  26. Keller Coleman

Gideon I have been watching you for a few years and I enjoy your videos. I have learned a ton. Please keep up the good work.

  27. Susan Evans

My first YouTube videos didn’t have professional sound because I couldn’t afford it at the time. Many of those older videos have gone viral not because of perfection but because of usefulness. It’s funny when I’m embarrassed about a video that has 32,000 views, but apparently people like it! Provide value, and people forgive you for the glitches.

  28. Sergio Felix

Hey Gideon, great advice man! I have started to loosen up on my videos (with the mistakes I make) while actually aiming toward creating better videos at the same time!

I even included some bloopers at the end on one of my latest videos (“7-Day Internet Marketing Plan Day 07 Welcome”) and it was FUN!

There’s not much feedback on YouTube since the videos are embedded on a training site but so far I have managed to create great connections with the people taking the training. ;-)

  29. Bonnie Gean

I would prefer the word “improve” your videos over perfection because this word doesn’t nail people to the wall thinking they have to be perfect.

There is no such thing as perfection, but we can always IMPROVE our work.

  30. Gabe Johansson

Yeah, I’m definitely a perfectionist, as well as my harshest critic. It’s horribly unproductive.

I’m pushing myself to create more helpful content, so this came at the perfect time. Thanks for the video, Gideon!

  31. Joel Sweeney

It is entitled Challenge Yourself. I posted it a short while ago. It is less than 2 minutes. It is on my channel. I would love to get your feedback.

  32. לאה סידן

There isn’t perfection in life, in every aspect of life
You can be better and better,
but you can never be the perfect
To make mistakes is humen ,but be perfect is divinity.

  33. Thomas Harrison

Very well done Gideon, I couldn’t agree more.

  34. LegoVideoCreator1555

You know the symbol on the bottom right of your video how it sends you to subscribe to your channel. How did you do that?

  35. James Roughton

Thanks for your response about Deming. I have used his teaching in some of my videos here on Youtube. @ mrjamesroughton

  36. Adam Bean

Stop making excuses and get a video up today!

  37. Alexandre Chaves

Biggest fan from Brasil ! You speak from the heart and touches us in a sincere way. Congratulations on the quality of your animations !

  38. vicsearnmoneyonline

Thanks Gideon, I am embarking on my YouTube journey , what you have said in this video is what I plan to do,; put them up, thus stopping analysis paralysis and improve on next one. I am following your teachings as I go.Thanks Gideon

    But you Gideon are awesome.

It the old cycle Plan Do Check and take Action the cycle to perfection over and over again. Demmings improvement is the japanese word Kiezen “a little bit of improvement every day” thanks Gideon

  42. Gideon Shalwick

Oh darn – yet another mistake I made lol! Just rolling with it…

  43. Gideon Shalwick

    Check description area?

  44. Gideon Shalwick

Great stuff Keller! Love to see you sticking around like this! What are you up to these days?

  45. Gideon Shalwick

Yeah I reckon you’re exactly spot on Susan! Love your last sentence: “Provide value, and people forgive you for the glitches.”

  46. Gideon Shalwick

Yeah the blooper thing can really help to build that connection with your audience. AND it also prevents one from taking oneself too serious!

  47. Gideon Shalwick

Yes! Continuous improvement towards the goal of perfection! We may never get there, but it doesn’t mean we should not aim for it :)

  48. Gideon Shalwick

lol – yeah those two things together can get the better of you Gabe! Have you read “Turning Pro” by Steven Pressfield? Great book on the “harshest critic” thing you’ve mentioned…

  49. Gideon Shalwick

Ah… now where is that from again? Or your own compilation?

  50. Gideon Shalwick

    Thanks Thomas!

  52. Gideon Shalwick

You’re very welcome James! It’s amazing how some very simple ideas can have a MASSIVE effect on the end result!

  53. Gideon Shalwick

Hehe – thanks Alexandre! Great to know have the “Biggest Fan From Brasil”!!! I am honoured!

  54. Gideon Shalwick

Yeah analysis paralysis can be fatal! Main reason, is cos it prevents you from creating that Action-Feedback loop that is essential for improvement. Keep it up!

  55. Gideon Shalwick

Yes! It’s amazing how far you can come in say 12 months, just by improving a little bit each day! Thanks for your insights Colin!

  56. Eva Macias

I should start on making videos, and stop being shy and scared if its not good.

  57. Jillian Rae

There is a great Agatha Christie quote that I find really helpful in combating perfectionism:
“It is a curious thought, but it is only when you see people looking ridiculous that you realise just how much you love them.”

Therefore, if I want people to love me, I’m practically obliged to look ridiculous. Luckily for me, that’s not difficult…

  58. Keller Coleman

Please check out my channel on Youtube. I’m working on making better videos and better presentations. Just now making better thumbnails. As a gift from me can you inbox me your address so I can send you a FREE copy of my book “The Power of Positive Thinking” I want to bless you because you have truly blessed me with all the information you have shared these past 2 years.

  59. Gideon Shalwick

    Yup – EXACTLY Eva!

  60. Gideon Shalwick

Ah now that is one brilliant piece of advice there – thanks for sharing Jillian!

  61. Gideon Shalwick

Yeah I’ve seen it Keller – congrats on your 100th subscriber by the way! Great job!

  62. Adam Bean

Brilliant advice Gideon. Far to many people get hung up on getting things perfect, so they never get anything done. Love that analogy of keep aiming for perfection, it is so spot on. Looking forward to meeting you at the Sunny Coast Meetup this week. Cheers Beanie

  63. Cheptiony Mutai

I love the plant analogy in the video! It communicates well to the viewer. The idea has worked for me on youtube and converted…with one video I thought it was imperfect.

  64. Mara Dower

Hey Gideon – how are you? I met you through Leon.

Question: what happened to your text where you would have tags, information on this video? Is this still done? I’m so out of touch with YouTube and videos production.

    Trust you’re well. Thanks Mara

  65. Edmund Pelgen

As in anything..start now..ship product, iterate and improve. Great
    reminder for us all

  66. Nathan Wei

Nothing specific. I’ve been putting videos up now on a daily basis for more than two years. And, as you said, I try to make improvements with every one. I like your special effects. Not sure how I could use them for my vids though.

  67. Katrina Peluso

you have gotten better for sure….but only with production…your personable personality is what we love…hollywood actors bomb during most interviews…and we tune in to see that…thats why people love youtube…keep being you…I think your the best already…start adding your daughter and watch your views trple ;]

  68. Sheikyerbouti8

Hi Gideon. love your videos. I am a horticulturist, and plants are the subject of my videos. Ironically, you made a mistake in this video with the plant. That cactus didn’t grow from a seed… it grew from two seeds. The bottom part is a normally pigmented cactus. It acts as a life support for the top, which is a mutant of another species that has no chlorophyll. It had to be cut from its roots and grafted on top of the other cactus, or it would have died.

  69. Gideon Shalwick

hah – now that is just EXCELLENT new information! I have learned something new! I guess the more mistakes I make the better the video gets? lol!

  70. Gideon Shalwick

Thanks Katrina! Yeah it’s so interesting about the Hollywood actor interviews right!

  71. Gideon Shalwick

Ah I was just a little lazy this time round – will add them in a little later…

  72. Gideon Shalwick

    hehe thanks Cheptiony!

  73. Gideon Shalwick

Hey Adam – thanks! Looking forward to meeting you this Thur!

  74. Ann Brennan

This is one of my favorite videos you have done. I struggled with this as a writer but finally realized it was the ones with imperfections that usually touched my readers the most. I now think of this as a learning process. Some of my earlier videos are almost cringe-worthy but I am glad I did them because I learned from them.

  75. SoulJuiceTV

perfectly imperfect … thanks bro … u rock

  76. Lark Lindig

Gideon you I think something wrong with your auto responder system. Never got the confirmaion email. Tried to go to you autoresponders website and it just a blnak loop. May want to test to see if others having this issue. Looking forward to the report. BTW do you even Mentor?

  77. PranksSquad

u really inspired me to start making comedy skits, its true what yu said @ 1:05

  78. Bonnie Gean

I would say it “depends” on the person, Gideon. If you tell some people to aim for perfection, you’ll stifle them. They’ll freeze in their tracks because they’ll never feel as if they can reach that goal. Most won’t even try for it. And let’s face it… there are many people out there not bothering to release a product that’s “good enough” because they’re too busy taking years to PERFECT it. :)

  79. cameramanage

    I’m enjoying your videos!

  80. CJ Grace

Ok, I have to admit that I have been observing you for well over a year now, but despite those observances, I have been trying to perfect myself at being perfect! Why? I have noticed a few of your bloopers, but it’s those bloopers are what make you human. I am not trying out for an academy award, so this Perfection goal has got to stop! I do want to improve my editing and of course the way I present myself, but I think it’s time to accept my imperfections! Thanks Gideon!

  81. Jo Fildi

Well, I subscribed because I liked your manner. I also subscribed after seeing the video you mentioned in this one.

Mistakes are awesome. I love when people make mistakes in their videos.

  86. brucelauderdale

Hey Gideon, thank you for this video it has helped. I am keen on getting my channel going. I did a load of weather report videos in the past. They were done at the bus stop and edited on the train trip to work. I stopped making these videos because people (friends) kept focusing on the negatives. I now have an idea for a niche and would like to start again but want perfect videos. This has been my problem, I have not started because I keep looking for tips to make them perfect. Thanks again.
