Why More Views Can Hurt You

One of the most popular questions I get is about how to get more views on YouTube.

But over the years, I’ve realised that the focus on just getting more views can get you in trouble.

Inside today’s video, I talk about what’s behind attracting the right kind of viewers to your channel. The kind of viewers who can actually spend money with you.

Make sure to leave you comment – I get back to comments and questions within 24 hrs of posting new videos :)

Getting more views is not always a good idea on YouTube. Especially if you
get one crucial thing wrong. Watch my latest video today to make sure
    you’re doing it right…

  2. nmm12nmm

blaming your audience for not having money for a product you made. Maybe
you made a bad product and no one really wants it. Maybe taking some self
responsibility will help expand your audience and boost your sales.

  3. Let's Go Road Trippin

Answer to the question for me is no. I am in the midst of a
re-organization of my channel to support my business, rather than just post
travel videos. This weekend I start with a live stream with travel news,
reviews, stories, and more. I am excited, and you are the reason I am
making these changes. I appreciate the videos, and I am learning a lot,
and taking them in to help my channel be more productive with the business.
You are more than welcome to join the conversation on Sunday evening, I
think the timing may be a little off for Australia, though.

  4. Rohe Energie - Vegan & Gesund

Great video Gideon! I will check our channel for being a bit better. Thanks

  5. swissoarsjr

    Great video

  6. 285XTREME

Thank you for the tip. That’s what I’ve been trying to do alot of times,
    finding the right people.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Yes! It's not as straight forward as one might think! I reckon a big part of it is simply getting involved in your audience, digging in and through trial and error figure out where to place your focus…

  7. tisme

    Thanks Gideon.

    Hi Gideon,
Very true what you are saying about the ‘right’ kind of traffic.
The company that I work for paid for a month of Facebook advertising (just
before Facebook changed their news feed policy) to increase the number of
So, the likes shot up within that month, but it amounted to nothing to be
honest because that new ‘popularity’ were people just idly clicking on
‘like’ after being force-fed an advert, RATHER than a lead genuinely
interacting with some content that they found useful. Brand visibility does
    NOT equate to brand loyalty.
You must attract the specific target customer to increase revenue, as you
    pointed out.

    A second thought, if you don’t mind….
Have you made a conscious business decision to kind of downgrade (that’s
probably the wrong word) the production values of your videos for 2014?
That’s really not meant as an insult. I’m sure I”m not the only subscriber
thinking that you have purposefully made a decision to appear less slick
and high quality as in your videos of late 2013. Did you feel that ‘super
slick production’ vibe was moving too far away from your target market and
you wanted to appear more ‘human’? :)

  9. waplogue1

i love how open and authentic you are! it’s just sad that not everyone can
appreciate that….love your videos! i’ve seen every singe one of them!

  10. void157

Well I’m a preacher and people tell me it sounds like I’m always selling
something… I am! I think they go hand in hand.

  11. Tony Rogers Jr

+Gideon Shalwick Could you make a video about how you shot this video with
your iPhone and edited it?? Thanks you!

  12. Ash Almond

Awesome explanation Gideon. It would be better to have more quality views
    and more quality subscribers too.

  13. AimenTv5 ©

    True words. Keep it up.

  14. Gideon Shalwick

Very interesting what you said about the FaceBook likes thing… I think there are a lot of cases where FB pages have A LOT of likes, but hardly any interaction or engagement. And of course, ENGAGEMENT IS KEY!

Re the "downgrade" in production values… I am running a little experiment at the moment. If it works well, I will share my results and what I got up to. If it does not work well… uhm… I might share the results in any case lol! Thank you for asking!

  15. waplogue1

i meant yours in this video in particular, but that's also true in general sometimes. I don't know if it's true, but that was my impression with this video. thank you for sharing your knowledge, i do really appreciate you and your videos! i've learned a huge lot from your channel! thank you!

  16. Gideon Shalwick

ok cool – thanks for clarifying +cicleflake!

  17. S A Bokhari

Awesome insides! Really put me to think about getting views and
subscribers. Thank you so much for sharing this kind awesome info. I would
love to see you preaching someday. Seriously. Love ya.

  18. Sarun Whix

This is the exactly answer I wanted from you for a question I asked you
once! NICE VIDEO. Keep making like this!

  19. Andy The Great

Nice video Gideon, I seem to have fallen into the same trap you mention in
the beginning. Could you suggest some more functional ways to avoid having
a more targeted audience on youtube and other social media ? Maybe you
could also make a video about that.

Thank you for all the useful information you produce

  20. Sergei Smalkov

Great sound for and iPhone video. What microphone did you use? Plugged
    directly into iPhone?

  21. Athena Creamer

    Very helpful!

  22. Eva Bogard

Do you recommend making a sales video for each desire that matches your
product, or present all desires in one video?

    • Gideon Shalwick

It depends a little on the situation and strategy +Eva Bogard! In general, I would pick only ONE main pain point (or desire/want/need etc) and make that the focus of the video. And of course, it makes sense to pick the BIGGEST pain point (or desire/want/need etc) for your video.

  23. Luiz Souza

Great video Gideon. I have 3 Youtube Channels. Only one give me profit.
This is the one where I offer what the viewers want to see. The kind of
people interested in the channel content is very important !
    Congratulations from Brazil !

  24. Manualideas Fancylooks

Oh, thank you very much for this video, that’s a great idea, I actually
don’t really know what my target is… maybe creative people? But how can
one know what kind of creative people will you better get in touch with? By
looking at which ones of your videos have the most views and positive
comments and centering around that area the rest of your videos, by being
repetitive around one or two concrete themes in the rest of your videos.? I
have a problem about that, i enjoy so many different things that I hate
being repetitive… you think it is usually worth it?

  25. Manualideas Fancylooks

Hi, Gideon, I wanted to share with you some experience that confirms what
you share here but, after 10 minutes writing it I couldn’t send it to you,
your private messages are blocked only for your contacts. How can I send
    the letter to you?

  26. suremaine

I really love how this video applies to wide variety of channels, not only
that, I really feel like you are talking to ME. Great job Gideon.

  27. Gideon Shalwick

    Awesome! You're very welcome +suremaine!

  28. Manualideas Fancylooks

Something happened to me and which proves how right you are in your “kind
of audience” remark. I was thinking about it when I was watching that video
and connecting this with what you say.
I have a t-shirt shop in Etsy and I had two YouTube friends, female and
male, that wanted to help me promote it just by giving them the t-shirt the
    will show in their video.
The female friend had and beauty and make up channel of about 3,000
subscribers. She showed the t-shirt, in a video, shared the link to my shop
and during the next 3-6 days the visits to my shop grew like mad.. I had no
sale but that was wonderful, attracting so many people.
The male friend has a very good channel full of all kind of videos all
about very interesting themes, mostly about how to feel good about yourself
and how to get the most out of YouTube, and a great number 40,000
subscribers. He showed the t-shirt, shared the link to my shop and that day
and the next days I noticed a slight raise in the visits to my shop, but
    not much.
It is funny that the male channel got more great comments about the t-shirt
he showed than the female channel, but much less effect in attracting
people to my shop. Things don’t work the way you imagine they work.
Thinking about what kind of audience each one attracted, I realized why
things happened the way they happened. My male friend channel attracts
people, mainly young men, who are looking for the easy life, opportunity
    and earning money through Youtube.
My female friend attracts women that are eager to buy the last cosmetic
product out there, the newest beauty and fashion trend, more centered in
spending money rather that in earning it … which is more like what my
    male friend’s audience looks for.
I hope you find any interest in this example. You share a lot of tips with
us, I hope this experience can be of any interest to you

  29. Gideon Shalwick

Awesome +Manualideas Fancylooks! That is a great example of what I was talking about inside my video! Great to see this very thing being confirmed in so many other places too! It's actually so simple when you really start thinking about it. Only attract people who are really interested in what you do :)

  30. Manualideas Fancylooks

+Gideon Shalwick And really interested in valuing and buying what they like, not getting it for free

  31. learnaccountingfast

Thank you Gideon great simple truth.

  32. Gideon Shalwick

Thank you +learnaccountingfast! Great to keep seeing you here :)

  33. Sylvs Reihana

Thanks Gideon, makes me realise that I need to target my videos more to
those KIND of viewers I want.

  34. Steven Washer

Excellent lesson, Gideon! The triple F is easy to remember as well, though
we probably wouldn’t want that score:)

  35. Sean Twomey

Thanks for this video, +Gideon Shalwick Always very insightful, useful and
well produced. Definitely does not help having a big audience with no
disposable income. And so important to identify, appeal and meet those
desires. Keep up the great work.

  36. John Lorefice

I have a YouTube channel (not attached to this account) and was hoping to
generate some income from views because (other than Affiliate products) I
really do not have anything to sell… and we all know how difficult it is
to get folks to buy Affiliate products from a banner ad or link in a
YouTube description or on my website…but that’s a whole different
discussion…. I have so many ideas for channels and unique content but
nothing to sell….is it a waste of time to pursue this strategy?

    • John Lorefice

      Keep 'em coming my friend…!

  37. Gideon Shalwick

well… one strategy is to simply build an audience using great content, and then sell advertising :)

  38. Veronica White

Thanks. Great Points. I’m going to do this right away!

  39. John Lorefice

Ok…I never thought of it from that angle…I'm on it!

  40. Gideon Shalwick

It's a longer road to monetization for sure, but depending on the topic, it could be very lucrative!

For example, my friend +Alborz Fallah at http://www.CarAdvice.com.au is doing rather well (multiple seven figure business), with mainly ad revenue.

Check it out for a good example :)

  41. Lina W

You’re so right. I’d know how to get a much larger flood of views and subs,
but it will not lead me where I want to go. I want as much “substantial”
(but not talking about money in my case) followers as possible, those who
understand and can relate to what I do. That will give me much more
    valuable feedback and genuine response.

  42. Kevin Michael Johnson

    Very useful information. Thank you
I love that you are recording on iPhone, that is what I am doing. What are
    you editing with?

  43. Detox and More

  44. David Reading

Thanks Gideon for getting us to think about the #1 issue and that is who
are we Targeting and followed by the #2 criteria of Do they have the money
to buy what you are offering. I guess I find it a little more difficult to
stay with you in all cases on the 3xF examples but the principal is totally
sound about the central message of the sweet spot.

My own thoughts coming from Business Strategy perspective would be “does it
solve their problem or satisfy a need?” “Will it make a profit or save
costs for the buyer” “Is it different in some way to what is already out

But another great video and it has got me thinking and that is the most
    valuable benefit of all.

  45. Julie Lewin

Great video Gideon … the standout point for me were the 3 F’s – Fame,
Fortune, Flesh … I’ve not heard this before – and it is a great starting
point of where to start with creating a video or blog post. Many thanks for
    your guidance :)

  46. www.victory100/Abundance

I found the tips/hints in this video are very relevant. Often we don’t pay
enough attention to the audience. Thank you Gideon

  47. Julie Weishaar

Thanks for the affirmation that it isn’t a numbers game but the quality and
relevancy of the numbers that matters more :)

    • Gideon Shalwick

That's it +Julie Weishaar! A list of 100 millionaires certainly seems more valuable (for business at least) than a list of 10,000 people without money hah!

  48. Avelardo Lopez

Gideon, I have come back to provide positive feedback, with response to
    your last e-mail.

In your video you are soo right. I applaud you for your message, education,
and efforts. Haters are just jealous. They do not understand what you
understand. And only through applying what you are talking about can they
learn. If making money only via YouTube is their source, then it is good to
aim at any kind of view. However, if you sell or offer a product service by
which on can make even more money, your message is king.

But for all others, more views can lead to more haters/trolls. Along with
that come negative feedback/messages, things that can pull down one’s
motivation. Running a channel should be fun, uplifting, creative, and a
thing to look forward too. Chris Pirillo along with other senior YouTubers
commented that when dealing with haters/trolls…depending on the
message…to just ignore, block, delete them. Other’s even thank them for
their negative feedback and ask for them to share their hate on social
media to let others know why. This is like using evil to advertise for you.
(Hahaha-[insert evil laugh here]) Yeah, like:

{Dear troll; thank you for your ‘hate-on-me message’. Could you please do
me the favor of going to your social media accounts, and letting the rest
of your world know how you feel about me? Thanks, with lots of love, your
    admiring friend, Mr. Me.

    PS: XOXO.}

Gideon, keep up the good work. I admire and have been following you for a
good while. And as a result of your work, have learned tremendously. I look
forward to your next video and forthcoming materials in the time to come.

    • Gideon Shalwick

Yes! The more you grow in your fame and influence, the more chance you have of getting seen by haters of course. Love the message that +Chris Pirillo uses – excellent stuff!

  49. Graham Gell

Thanks for sharing and giving me some good concrete tips

  50. Burland Murphy

I’m have just started up on youtube and find your videos to be very
    helpful, thank you

  51. Gideon Shalwick

    You're welcome +Graham Gell

  52. Mary Bartnikowski

Yes this was inspiring, it got me thinking about the “right kind of people”
the ones who will buy your products, as I am now moving forward on that
concept with my own channel, thank you. I’ve enjoyed seeing your videos
over the years and have been a subscriber for a while, btw you might be
interested to see my channel for a moment – love yours!

  53. Carolyn Lewis

I am enjoying your videos, Gideon! I am new to making video and stumbling
through the basics. What microphone are you using with your iPhone, here?
    The sound is really good!

  54. HalfEatenGamer

What age do you have to be to start content marketing?

  55. Drew Sunderman

Thank you for this video, I have learned a lot and I can use the
information to be a better business person, Drew

  56. ellisguy

Thank you very much! It’s made me reconsider how I’ll approach my
    subscribers :) I’m also a big fan 😀

  57. Lauren Ostrowski Fenton

Hi my name is lauren..I have been trying to find a way of contacting
you…please would you be my business coach..I am from victoria…aust…I
have followed your products for two years..please consider

  58. Reg Boczko

Video is the best thing for marketing , but is so confusing how to target
    good customers… Watch this…

  59. Sean Knoweth
  60. Tim Maynard

Thanks for the tips. Lately, the past few videos I’ve done satisfy the
points you make. But going forward, I’ll home in on them with more

  61. 305graffartist

nice tip but I find that out long ago

  62. Marco David Rivera

Now subscribed. Took notes and will continue to view. Thank you.

  63. Glendon Cameron

I agree 100% I got a serious client from a video with less than 500
    views. Context is everything!

Hey people , i have an amazing channel and i hope you will like it ! Please
watch my videos i love you all <3 (NoHomo) ahahha nice video btw!

  65. BarryDennen12

I did a video of Club Penguin a little over a year ago. For some reason
it’s caught on and it’s getting a ton of hate from a bunch of 12 y/o
retards. Sometimes it really doesn’t pay to have traffic on a video.

  66. Mark Pierce

I love you analogy of finding the sweet spot focusing on the three areas you pointed out in this video. I have worked on my services for the past few months but left my Youtube channel unattended.

Now I am focusing on producing videos for my business and channel, I have only a few followers. I did understand I needed a targeted audience, but didn't really know what approach to take. Thanks +Gideon Shalwick!

  67. Gideon Shalwick

Do you think some people do not appreciate MY openness and authenticity? Or do you mean more the openness and authenticity of others in general?

  68. Gideon Shalwick

SOOO glad to hear about the changes you're making +Let's Go Road Trippin! Looking forward to seeing your channel CRUSH it!!!

  69. Gideon Shalwick

Thinking about it yes +Tony Rogers Jr! Thank you for asking!

  70. Gideon Shalwick

Haha for sure +void157! After all, I think ALL of us are in the selling game. We ALL have something to sell at any one point… be it an idea, ourselves or even something as trivial as "selling" your mum on the benefits of ice cream 😉

  71. Gideon Shalwick

    Thank you +swissoarsjr!

  72. Gideon Shalwick

There is that yes… and I think it's a combination of factors. It's hardly ever just one thing that is wrong. In some cases though, I do believe that targeting the right audience can make it A LOT easier to sell goods and services and your desired price. What do you think +nmm12nmm?

  73. Gideon Shalwick

You're welcome +tisme – got any more ideas for other videos I can create for you?

  74. Gideon Shalwick

Thank you +Ash Almond! Great to see you on here. It seems to all start with that question "WHO". As in, who are the most important people to target for your business. Target the wrong crowd, and you could end up wasting a lot of time. I have lots of personal experience with this lol!

  75. Gideon Shalwick

Awesome +Rohe Energie – Vegane Ernährung & Mehr (my most frequent commenter haha!). Looking fwd to seeing your channel totally OWN it!

  76. Gideon Shalwick

+Fritteyboy Simply subscribe to my channel. Then check your email settings inside the YouTube Settings area. You can set it so that YouTube sends you an update everytime there is a new video in your subscription feed.

  77. Gideon Shalwick

+Mark Pierce Onwards and upwards +Mark Pierce! Engaging in a video content marketing strategy will help you grow your audience… not just in numbers, but also very (importantly) in strengthening the relationship you have with them. This is KEY!

  78. Avelardo Lopez (Mr. Suave)

+Fritteyboy Consider also subscribing to Gideon's e-mail. Here is the link to Gideon's blog site. You can signup/subscribe at the top of the main page. Good luck, hope that this helps.

  79. Gideon Shalwick

Interesting +Gabe Johansson! Why did you change to the new channel if the other one was going so much better?

  80. Gabe Johansson

The main reason was that I really just didn't like the industry I was in. Essentially marketing marketing courses to marketers. It didn't seem right lol

I definitely learned a lot, and I'm trying to apply that to the fitness community. It's working but much slower. Plus, I have more of an entertainment feel than before.

  81. Gideon Shalwick

Ah fitness – HUGE niche! :)

  82. Gabe Johansson

Absolutely and it won't be long before I really figure it out haha

  83. Gideon Shalwick

    Totally +Gabe Johansson!

  84. Gideon Shalwick

Haha – when I was a little boy, my mom actually thought I might become a preacher one day lol!

  85. S A Bokhari

    See… I'm close right.

  86. Gideon Shalwick

Oh brilliant! One more happy customer!

  87. Gideon Shalwick

Hey +Andy The Great! Thank you for your question. I'd love to answer it, but would you be so kind to restate your question or explain it a little more? Not sure I understand it…

  88. Gideon Shalwick

    Hey +Sergei Smalkov – I cover it here: http://gideonshalwick.com/best-vlogging-equipment/

  89. Andy The Great

Sorry, I meant if you could you suggest some tips on how someone could get a more targeted audience for his youtube channel

  90. Gideon Shalwick

+Andy The Great Ok cool – will create something about that :)

  91. Gideon Shalwick

    Thanks +Athena Creamer!

  92. Gideon Shalwick

Hey +Luiz Souza! Thank you! So glad to hear that what I said in my video confirms what you're already seeing with your channels! Onwards and upwards!

  93. Gideon Shalwick

I have the same issue regarding being repetitive +Manualideas Fancylooks! Like you, I am a very creative person, and love creating new things. Now, about finding that right target… I don't know if there really are any silver bullets for this one. The best I have found is with "intelligent trial and error".

In other words, digging into the market that you are currently engaged in, with the goal of finding your ideal "sweet spot" in the market. This can take time as you get to know your audience, and the pockets within your audience who may be the right people to focus on.

  94. Gideon Shalwick

support@rapidvideoblogging.com should get to me. But are you sure you can't post it here so that everyone else can benefit from the conversation? I prefer getting back to comments than to emails for that very reason.

For example, is it possible to make your letter a bit more general (in case you don't want to reveal certain details), but still specific enough for me to be able to help you?

  95. Manualideas Fancylooks

+Gideon Shalwick It does take time, attention and patience indeed. You are very kind, thank you!

  96. Manualideas Fancylooks

+Gideon Shalwick I will try to make those changes and see if I can get less specific. I don't mind sharing it, but because I talk about some other people I just thought it was better not to share in public, I will review i and see what I can change then, thanks. You deserve what you ask for because you give a lot of information for free.

  97. Andy The Great

thank you my good man :)))

  98. Gideon Shalwick

Haha +Steven Washer! The 3 F's are actually derived from the 3 G's (Girls, Gold and Glory)… but I thought F's seemed more appropriate 😉

  99. Gideon Shalwick

    Awesome to hear +Veronica White!

  100. Gideon Shalwick

You've said it well +Lina W. I think ultimately that's really what it comes down to… building a really solid following of awesome people who you can count on!

  101. Gideon Shalwick

Thank you +Kevin Johnson! Re editing… now that is a secret for now. I may or may not create a video about it soon. But for now, realise that the editing part is super fast! :)

  102. Gideon Shalwick

you're very welcome +Detox and More! Did anything stand out to you as being useful?

  103. Gideon Shalwick

Ah yes… The desire sweet spot is only the first of three components I see as the bigger "audience" sweet spot. The two things I will be adding (other than desire) is:

    1. Numbers (are there enough of them)

    2. Dollars (do they have money to pay for the solution that meets their desire)

My next video may be about this more broader topic :)

Thank you for your great feedback!

  104. Gideon Shalwick

    You're welcome! All the best!

  105. Sergei Smalkov

+Gideon Shalwick Thank you! I must have missed on this one.

  106. Gideon Shalwick

    You're welcome +http://www.victory100/Abundance!

  107. Gideon Shalwick

Thank you for your encouraging messages +Julie Lewin! Much appreciated! Looking fwd to seeing some more videos and content about your PhD topic!

  108. Julie Weishaar

Hey +Gideon Shalwick Can you share that list of 100 millionaires? :)

  109. Julie Lewin

    +Gideon Shalwick
You are welcome :) – vids are coming!

  110. Rachel Ellis

This makes total sense and I enjoyed the video as well. Very…pleasant.

  111. Gideon Shalwick

    awesome to hear +Ellis Guy!

  112. Gideon Shalwick

Old enough to come up with content ideas that would appeal to your target audience :)

  113. Gideon Shalwick

Hey Carolyn – here is what I am using at the moment:

    1. Lapel Microphone

    2. Microphone Cord

    3. iStabiler Tripod Mount

The iStabilizer Tripod mount will work with any tripod. So if you already have a normal tripod around, there is no need to get another one.

    4. iStabilizer Monopod (optional if you wanna do cool selfies while walking around)

  114. Eva Bogard

Thanks for taking the time and offering some good advice :)

  115. Gideon Shalwick

    You're very welcome +Eva Bogard!
