Why Your Videos Suck Most Of The Time And How You Can Fix Them

by Gideon Shalwick on July 12, 2010 · 29 comments

A while ago I sent out an email to my subscriber list and got a very interesting response back from an old friend. I was a little surprised at his response at first, but then realized that he was actually helping me out a great deal to be more successful with what I do.

When you get to a certain level in your profession or calling, you become so “advanced” in your knowledge and experience that you often forget the basics of what it is that makes you truly successful.

And this is the thing that my old friend pointed out to me.

So, I decided to create a short video on it, revealing his response, and how you can use that to help you make your videos (any anything else you do online) MUCH more effective and powerful, where you actually touch peoples lives in a real way!

As you watch the video, ask yourself this question: “Do I make the same mistake? And if so, what can I do to correct it?” Why don’t you share your experiences with this inside the comments below -- cos that’s where the REAL value takes place!

[..YouTube..] Very good advice. I always try to keep my audience in mind. Some of my videos may seem strange is if you watch them and don’t know me or my audience. I created the short film “Sexual Understanding” specifically for my audience because so many people were writing me asking me to be shirtless in my videos. It may be very strange though if you stumble upon it.

[..YouTube..] Hey Gids,

Great video!

It’s true, I believe that before putting a video out, you should firstly think about how this video could benefit the viewers and at the same time, it should be valuable enough that they can decode the message you’re talking about to what you expect they should learn from it and vice versa. It’s called the sole purpose of creating the video to them. :)

Thanks for the reminders!

[..YouTube..] That’s a good thing to think about. Sometimes we can only think about that when it comes to a salesletter of your offer. I need to do that for everything.

Also, got another question to add, how did you set up your comments to stream from YouTube directly to your blog comments? That’s a really cool feature!

[..YouTube..] Very pertinant Gideon. In fact this will help get over the ‘getting over yourself’ thing where you’re so worried about what you look like that you forget your message. This will DEFINITELY help me! Cheers.
Hope you’re getting some sleep by the way !! :o )

[..YouTube..] @wendydashwoodquick Hey Wendy!

Getting over yourself is key! And yes, this is a great way for doing it. Actually, it seems that the less I worry about myself, and the more I concentrate on my audience, the better my content becomes!

Talk soon!

Thank you Gideon. I’m glad you started thinking on this. Overall I think you have thought about your audience. But here is where I think people have problems–they don’t drill down to the level of the person they are dealing with. For example I am in the process of setting up a word press blog based on your videos. And I’m no techy. So I follow the steps and get to video 4 and then low and behold I’m wondering if your statement that it takes 24-48 hours for the domain to get connected to the webhost means that I should stop doing what I’m doing and wait 48 hrs before moving through the other steps. So then I do a search on your website for the answer: your forum is down because of spam(spammers need to stop this stuff…I digress) and then I can’t figure out how to reach you or if my issue is considered important per your definition. So I’m just sitting here waiting for 24-48 hrs to be up before moving on to uploading files, and doing the config stuff. Now don’t get me wrong–I love your videos and your teaching methods but this is just an example where sometimes you don’t realize just how deficient your viewer’s skills are and that you really have to perhaps assume they don’t know anything about technology. So I was glad to hear you say that this “what’s in it for me” triggered something for you. We can all improve in this area. Me too, obviously.
Anyway I love your website, your blogs and your videos and I know they’ll only get better and you will be blessed with abundance beyond your wildest imagination–so I’m asking my question now before you are out of reach. Thanks for everything. And if you have time, you can let me know right here on this post if I should go on with all stages of the set up video even while I’m waiting for the host and the domain to connect.
Thank you.

Hey Sandy

Thank you for your thoughtful response!

Sorry to hear you’re having some issues with setting up your WordPress blog. The method I teach is a little more complicated than the latest method around. But the reason for that is to allow everyone in our course to be “on the same page” so to speak and to eliminate unnecessary confusion.

But concerning your specific issue about waiting 24 to 48 hours for your domain name to propagate… as far as I know, you can actually already install your WordPress files on your server even before all the “propagation” has taken place. It varies from hosting service to hosting service, but I am pretty sure it should work regardless.

I’m not quite sure how better to give you instruction with my videos as I’ve made them as simple to follow as humanly possible – I challenge you to find ANY other videos on the topic online that does a better job. The next best thing would be for me to fly over to your place, and to come and sit next to you and tell you exactly what to do… which of course is not feasible :)

So, one huge recommendation, if you’re still stuck, is to either get in touch with Joel from http://www.BlogTechGuy.com so that he can quickly do the installation for you. Or you could even join our course and then get access to our members only forum area where you can then trouble shoot your technical issues.

With around 65,000 people combined on my email list right now, obviously I cannot respond to everyone personally. So please forgive me if your question has fallen through the cracks. But my customer support team should always get back to you with a recommendation… especially if you’re one of my paying members.

Once again… thanks for your constructive feedback. That’s how I learn and make sure I serve you better :)

Thank you for answering right away. On with the show. I’ll see if I can do it myself, for now. Thanks for the referral to the blog tech guy. We’ll see what happens. And by the time of this writing the webhost and the domain name server is connected.

Take care.

Yep, that serves as a good reminder not only in videos but also business in general. We should always be thinking, ‘what is in it for them’. There are plenty of business’ that have great products and features but they forget to connect with their audience and state clearly ‘what is in it for them’.

There is a great video on TED titled ‘Insire others to action’ which touches on the same theme and talks about why companies such as Apple and even people like Martin Luther King managed to attract such great appeal. They didn’t just tell people what they wanted but appealed to something other people wanted too (M.King – ‘a dream of a better USA’, Apple – ‘being different from the status quo).

Your message is spot on Gideon, but it goes much deeper then just videos, we should add that message throughout our whole business thinking.

Hi Gideon,

Thanks for all the work you’ve done and are continuing to do in this area of video presenting. I have to admit that, while writing a blog doesn’t scare me too much (I’m a writer :-) ), the idea of actually talking off the cuff–or even from a script–on any sort of visual media terrifies me.

The silly thing is I can stand up in front of groups of 20 to 200 and, other than the normal nervousness, there is no problem. But stick a camera in my face and everything I want to say sneaks out my ears and slithers down my spine in an effort to get away from the pressure of the ‘all-seeing-eye’.

It’s really annoying, and more than a little embarrassing. Am I the only person this happens to? Surely not. Do you have any advice for devout camera-cowards?

Many thanks,
Gracie

What service do you recommend for storing video and audios in the cloud?

I ask because I am getting heavy into podcasting now and I do not want to run of out bandwidth with my
website hosting company.

I already have feedburner and my itunes channel set up and I am looking for a solution that I can use that
will still submit my podcasts to my already establish itunes channel.

Please advice

thanks
